The Texas Longhorns put on a football clinic when they destroyed the North Texas Mean Green in their 2006 college football season opener in Austin. The game kicked off at noon on Saturday, September 2nd, 2006.
Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy demonstrated complete command of the offense pleasing Texas fans that were concerned about any potential slow down with the departure of Vince Young. After completing his first career pass, McCoy thew a bullet to star wide receiver Limas Sweed who ran for a 60 yard touchdown run. The clinic was on from that point forward. The only thing slowing down the Texas Longhorn offense was themselves. The North Texas Mean Green were completely over taken by Sweed who caught caught 5 passes for 110 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The game proved to be a tune up for the Longhorns and coach Matt Brown, who meet up with the Ohio State Buckeyes next week in a matchup that will have National Championship Title implications. Besides the air and ground attack, the Texas defense was superb. The Longhorns held the Mean Green to one touchdown, a 12 yard pass from quarterback Woody Wilson to wide receiver Brandon Jackson.
The Longhorns running backs had a great day scoring 4 touchdowns and gaining close to 200 yards on the ground.
The special teams unit for the Longhorns was able to block a punt in the first half and the Aaron Lewis from the Texas defense returned a fumble for a touchdown in the 4th quarter.

1st Quarter: Texas Longhorns 14 – North Texas Mean Green 0
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy threw his second pass of the season to wide receiver Limas Sweed for a 60 yard touchdown to cap off a 3 play 75 yard drive. Later in the quarter, Colt McCoy ran the ball in from 1 yard out to cap off a 8 play 37 yard drive.
2nd Quarter: Texas Longhorns 28 – North Texas Mean Green 0
After a 4 play drive for 55 yards, Longhorns running back Selvin Young ran the ball 1 yard for a touchdown. Just before the half, Selvin Young scored on a 6 yard touchdown run to cap off a 9 play drive for 57 yards.
3rd Quarter: Texas Longhorns 42 – North Texas Mean Green 7
The Mean Green got on the board with a 12 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Woody Wilson to wide receiver Brandon Jackson. The play capped off a 9 play drive for 75 yards. The Lonhorns answered back and scored a touchdown when Limas Sweed caught a 29 yard pass from Colt McCoy to end a 9 play 70 yard drive. Later in the quarter, Jamaal Charles had a 10 yard touchdown run for Texas.
4th Quarter: Texas Longhorns 56 – North Texas Mean Green 7
Henry Melton scored on a 3 yard touchdown run to cap off a 8 play 29 yard scoring drive by the Texas offense. Aaron Lewis returned a North Texas fumble for a 10 yard touchdown right after the scoring drive by Melton.
