Baylor came into this season with a great deal of promise as many expected quarterback Robert Griffin III, two years removed from knee surgery, to take his game to a new level. Neither Griffin nor the Bears disappointed with the former taking home the Heisman Trophy and the latter posting its first nine or more win season since 1991.
After losing three out of four games in the middle portion of its schedule, Baylor looked as though it might falter in the same manner it did last season, but Art Briles’ squad regrouped for the stretch run in a big way.
The Bears, who averaged 43.5 points per game, won five in a row to close out the regular season, knocking off bowl teams Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas in the process.
Washington began the post-Jake Locker years in fine fashion, winning five of its first six games behind the stellar play of sophomore quarterback Keith Price, but it did not play well in the season’s second half.
The Huskies lost three of their last four games, falling to Oregon, USC, and Oregon State before crushing in-state rival Washington State 38-21 in the season finale. The poor finish did not keep Washington from recording its second consecutive seven win season, a clear sign that the program has moved on from 2004-2008 Dark Ages under third year head coach Steve Sarkisian.
While Sarkisian may have the Huskies headed in the right direction, they will have their hands full containing Baylor tomorrow night. Washington’s 94th ranked defense (426.3 ypga) is no match for Griffin and the Bears explosive offense.
