West Virginia suffered some inexplicable losses this season, falling to Syracuse and Louisville, but the 9-3 Mountaineers won the Big East Conference by virtue of their 24-21 win at Cincinnati. And, despite some shaky performances, West Virginia does come into tonight’s game with some positive energy after winning its final three games.

The Mountaineers, who are led by quarterback Geno Smith, topped Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and South Florida by a combined seven points. Smith threw for 3,978 yards and 25  touchdowns in his second season as a starter. The junior out of Miami also reached a season high 463 pass yards in a 47-21 loss to top ranked LSU.

Clemson, like West Virginia, experienced some head scratching setbacks this year, but the losses were mysterious in nature only because the team’s tremendous play through the first eight weeks of action. While many expected the Tigers to be a force in the ACC this season, few saw them winning the conference after posting a 6-7 record last year.

Clemson ran through its first eight opponents, not suffering its first loss until an October 29th meeting with Georgia Tech. That slip up seemed to send the Tigers into a tailspin as they dropped two of their next three (at NC State, at South Carolina) to close out the regular season. Dabo Swinney’s troops did snap out of their late season funk in the ACC Championship Game with a resounding 38-10 win over Virginia Tech.

Can the Tigers, which feature their own dynamic quarterback in sophomore Tajh Boyd (3,578 yards, 31 touchdowns) keep things rolling tonight, though? While West Virginia’s presence in a BCS bowl is certainly questionable, the Mountaineers do outrank Clemson in points per game, yards per game, and yards per game allowed.

2012 Orange Bowl Betting Trend: The Tigers are 0-3 straight up and against the spread playing as a 0 to 3.5 point favorite with a total of 54.5 points or more (Under is 3-0 in those games).
