Western Michigan Broncos 2006 MAC West Preview
by Thomas Jensen on Saturday, September 2nd, 2006
First year head coach Bill Cubit helped the Western Michigan Broncos rebound in 2005, winning seven of their eleven games, and becoming the first Mid American Conference team to ever lose eight MAC games the previous year and win five the next. Heach coack Bill Cubit, who received Mid American Conference Coach of the Year honors, gets 14 starters back this season.
On offense, the Western Michigan Broncos will rely on some strong recruits and a stud offensive line as they lose their top running back, wide receiver, and tight end. They also will be without sophomore quarterback Tim Hiller who went down with a knee injury in the last game against Northern Illinois.
On defense, the front seven could be one of the Mid American Conference's best, and the secondary is seasoned enough to fill the vacated cornerback slots. The defense in 2005 cut 8.5 points per game off its 2004 points per game average and that stat should improve even more this year.
Special Teams, which was great last year, returns almost completely intact.
The Western Michigan Broncos are among the more seasoned groups in the conference, but because of graduation losses on offense and a tough road schedule, they may not challenge for a bowl this season.
