Beavers Shock No.3 Trojans In 33-31 WinWith the help of four Southern Cal turnovers, the Oregon State Beavers jumped out to a 33-10 lead late in the third quarter, but had to hold off a furious rally to end the Trojan’s 27- game Pac-10 winning streak with the 33-31 win. Southern Cal’s 18-game road winning streak also ended when Oregon State's Jeff Van Orsow  deflected a pass on the Trojans' two- point conversion attempt with seven seconds remaining.

Moments later, thousands in the Reser Stadium crowd of 42,871 transformed the field into a frothing sea of orange as they celebrated with unbridled glee after Brandon Powers caught a desperation onside kick to seal OSU’s (5-3, 3-2) second victory over the Trojans (6-1, 4-1) in 38 years.

“How bout those Beavers,” shouted Oregon State coach Mike Riley while leaving the field after the game. “This is a great win, a big-time win. This was a great win over a great program.”

Saturday's game was a clinic in losing a football game for Southern Cal. The Trojans fumbled three times, had a touchdown turned into an interception and allowed a punt return for an Oregon State score. For the third week in a row, the Southern Cal defense did not force a turnover.

For the past three games, the Trojans defense has not forced a turnover. The only time USC has taken the ball away from an opponent in that span, the ball bounced off an Arizona State punt returner's leg.

The youth of the SC defense could be contributing. Many of the Trojans players appear wary of missing tackles and being blamed for big plays, so they are neglecting to make big plays of their own. That is one of the theories coaches have discussed.

The Trojan’s players seemed more stunned than saddened by the loss, which puts its national-title hopes on life support.

"When you're a team of our stature and you're going for the things we're going for every year, of course it's a sickening feeling," junior nose tackle Sedrick Ellis said. "I'm just so used to winning. I think I've lost two games in four years."

"The most important thing is how we respond, how we turn this thing around and come back again," Trojans head coach Pete Carroll said. "We've been here before. I know I've been through it before. We've already addressed it, talked about what it takes to get this thing back going again."
