If you want to win $100, a bet on a male candidate will cost you $130 while a bet on a female will cost you $110. Does this tell us the oddsmakers think the winning gender will be male? American Idol 2008 (Season 7) winner will be? Male -120 Female -110 My answer to that question is...not really. The truth of the matter is the oddsmakers don’t know any more about who will win than my dog. However, oddsmakers do have a better sense on how the public will bet and that’s why they set the odds as they do. So the oddsmakers think you the public will lean towards betting for a guy than a gal. It’s a little hard to tell right now since the judges try to keep the number of qualifying candidates even. Perhaps a good gauge to go by is the opinion of Mr. American Idol himself, Simon Cowell . In a recent interview the surly judge said, “there are three or four very strong guys as well as three or four very strong girls in the competition this year.” He went on to call it "one of the most open competitions we've ever had." Although he says he has an idea of who will make the finals, he doesn't think there is a clear winner at this point. That tidbit of information came from a blog posted on the American Idol webpage. Ok, forget about getting any good clues out of Simon. It looks like we are still 50-50 on the guessing since Simon didn’t indicate he favored either gender. The round of first auditions are complete so now it’s time for American Idol to move to the Hollywood round where the number of contestants will be pared down to the final 24. Online sportsbook
