2010 Oscars Best Picture Odds

The envelope please – the betting favorite to win the Oscar for Best Picture at the 2010 Academy Awards on Sunday March 7th is director and producer James Cameron's 'Avatar' . Nominations for the 2010 Oscars will not be revealed until Tuesday, Feb. 2, but online sportsbook BetUS.com has already joined in on – Oscars fun – by putting up its 2010 Oscars betting board.

2010 Oscars Best Picture OddsIt's our pleasure at Point-Spreads.com to break down the list of Best Picture candidates that BetUS.com oddsmakers think are worthy of a gamble.

As we said earlier, 'Avatar' has been installed with the best odds but will Academy voters go for  Science Fiction genra? They usually don't giving reason to think that "Avatar" could be a little over-rated. This isn't a movie review so don't get excited. We are strictly looking at it from a gambling perspective.

In sort of a surprise move, BetUS has installed the Iraq War flick 'The Hurt Locker' , directed by Kathryn Bigelow as a solid Best Picture candidate at +175 odds. 'Hurt Locker' is a well reviewed war drama that stands a good shot of taking the statuette.

'Up in the Air' couldn't figure out if it wanted to be a drama or a comedy but regardless, it has drawn plenty of raves. This film is probably the favorite among movie critics and stands a good chance with gamblers at +300 odds. And having George Clooney as its lead man doesn't hurt either. Critics are saying 'Up in the Air' is his career role.

Quinten Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' follows up with fourth best odds, though a big drop-off from the previous three, at +1200. This is my personal favorite but bias sways my judgment. I like Quinten Tarantino films. I fully expect Basterds to pick up a Best Picture nomination but do not think it is a film Academy voters will fall for. On the other hand, Christopher Waltz is a shoo-in for Best Supporting Actor.

'Precious' – an urban drama installed at +2000 odds of winning the prize, is a film I haven't seen. What I do know is the movie is a well done low budget independent film. And we all know, Academy voters tend to fall for these movies. Hopefully I will steal the time to see it soon.

The remaining films on the BetUS.com Best Picture betting board are:

Invictus +3500 –

Nine +4000 – poorly reviewed – doesn't have a chance and probably will not get a nomination.

Up +5000 – The Academy will not hand Best Picture to a cartoon I don't care how good it is.
