American Idol: Girls less impressive than the guysWednesday night was ladies night at American Idol when the 12 female finalists performed while the boys looked on. The girls got off to a rocky start unlike the men the previous night who came out of the blocks rocking. To be honest with you, I could have taken a nap during most of the female performances.

Kristy Lee Cook , 24, of Selma, Oregon opened the show with her rendition of Rescue Me but it was the audience who needed rescuing. Even Randy Jackson who is nice on most occasions, said to Cook, “It wasn’t your best performance.” Then Simon Cowell compared her to a robot and criticized her choice of songs.

Joanne Borgella , 25, of Bayonne, New Jersey, followed Cook and failed to wake anybody up who happened to fall asleep during the first song. Borgella sang the Dionne Warwick classic I Say a Little Prayer. She might need a little prayer if she hopes to survive the first cut. “I didn’t like it at all,” said Simon. “It was very Cabaret.”

Alaina Whitaker , the youngest performer at 16, provided the first quality performance of the night when the Tulsa, Oklahoma native gave some justice to Dianna Ross’s More Today than Yesterday. It is Whitaker’s wish not to go home on her 17th birthday that happens to be Thursday. Following her performance, Jackson said,” Season seven is the year of the young ones man.” Even Simon claimed the performance was very good. The odds will be high that Whitaker will be back next week.

The Rock’n’Roll nurse from Mulberry, Ind., Amanda Overmyer, rocked the place with Baby Please Don’t Go. The 23 year old with the wild pants pleased Simon who said, “I love everything you do.” It’s probably safe to say Overmyer will stick around at least another week.

Amy Davis , 25, of Lowell, Ind., perhaps hit the low point of the night with her lame attempt at Where the Boys Are. The most enjoyable moment was hearing Randy Jackson tell Davis she needed more twang when singing Patsy Cline. Well, if memory serves me correctly, it was Connie Francis who made this song famous, not Cline. Simon commented, “I think you are going to struggle after that.” I am just guessing, but don’t look for Davis to be back next week.

Brooke White , 24, of Mesa, Ariz., might join Davis with a Thursday night exit after poorly performing the old Turtles hit Happy Together. “I am struggling with the relevance,” said Simon following White’s performance.

The audience and viewers were rescued when 17 year old Alexandria Lushington of Douglasville, Georgia did well with her rocking version of Blood, Sweat and Tears Spinning Wheel. Randy loved the performance and costume and Paula thought the performance was relevant. Only Simon disagreed saying the vocals weren’t that great. However, Lushington was still one of the best of the night.

The judges were impressed when Ramiele Malubay of Miramar, Fla., sang the Dusty Springfield song You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. Malubay, the little girl with a big voice impressed the judges. “You are a force to be reckoned with,” said Paula. Simon followed with the comment, “You out sang every single person.

Houston, Texas native Kady Malloy , 18, followed with Groovy Kind of Love and was not winning over many fans. Randy said the song was “ok for me,” but called her performance restrained. Simon called it like, “Night of the Living Dead.”

Asia’h Apperson , 18, of Joplin, Missouri did an adequate job with Janis Joplin’s Piece of my Heart. Simon said, “For me, it was my favorite of the night.

Syesha Mercado , 21, who lives in Miami, rocked the place with Tobacco Road. Her powerful voice and performance impressed all the judges. Randy liked the power in her voice and her consistency. Paula said it was Joyful while Simon commented, “It wasn’t your best but you are one of the best.”

Carly Smithson , the native of Dublin, Ireland and current San Diego resident, performed more than adequately, Shadow of Your Smile. Randy thought the vocal was the best of the 24 this week but Simon claimed he didn’t get it. "Once again, I'm on my own here, Simon said.” I didn't get it."

Tonight we will see who didn’t get it when four contestants will be shown the door.

Online wagering website Sportsbook.com has provided updated betting odds on this seventh season of American Idol.  The men are heavy favorites to produce this years winner with 5/7 odds compared to 1/1 for a female winner. After watching the girls on Wednesday and guys on Tuesday, we at Point-Spreads.com are not surprised. However; there is plenty more to go and surprises are common.
