Reigning Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, Joey Chestnut of Vallejo, California, burst onto the competitive eating scene in 2005 when he downed 32 hot dogs at Nathan's Famous to take third place at the event. He followed that effort up by consuming an American record 52 dogs in 2006 while finishing second to Japan's Takeru Kobayashi, who ate 54. The American, however, set his place in history, and in the annals of Nathan's competition, in 2007 when he ingested a world and contest record 66 hot dogs.

Chestnut's sterling performance prompted Nathan's and the IFOCE (International Federation of Competitive Eating) to put a 10 minute time limit on the contest last year. Chestnut and Kobayashi both gobbled up 59 weiners in the new time frame, which led to a five dog overtime eat-off. Chestnut successfully defended his Mustard-Yellow Belt by getting through the five dogs before Kobayashi.

The 215lbs. Chestnut, who has many world eating records to his credit, is also known for downing the famous Hard Attack Grill's Quadruple Bypass Burger (8000 calories) in 1 minute 47 seconds.

Takeru Kobayashi, the six time Nathan's champion, is, not surprisingly, the other favorite in tomorrow's contest. "The Tsunami" put the event on the national, and world, map when he ate 50 hot dogs in his first ever contest in 2001. The 5'8" 128lbs. Kobayashi doubled the previous world record with his eating prowess and went on to win the next five Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contests.

In 2007, Kobayashi shattered his own world record of 54 hot dogs consumed by eating 63, but he fell three short of Chestnut.

Despite his recent setbacks at Nathan's, the 31 year old Nagano, Japan native feels confident that he will emerge victorious when the dogs start flying tomorrow afternoon.

"It's going to be a good battle this year," Kobayashi said. "[But] I'm going to bring the belt back [to Japan]."

Tomorrow's competition, which first took place in 1916 with the winner eating 13 hot dogs, will again feature the 10 minute time limit for the contestants.
