American Idol Season 6 Betting OddsAmerican Idol kicks off its 6th season tonight on Fox with a 2-day, 4-hour premier.  Returning judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson will begin the process of picking apart thousands of Idol hopefuls as they sing their way to Hollywood…or right back to where they came from.

There’s no other phenomenon quite like Idol.  It seems as though the show has taken over the world producing overnight stars.  Kelly Clarkson won the first season of American Idol and has proven to be a success in the music industry.  She has won countless awards for both of her albums, Thankful and Breakaway. Nine.com has posted American Idol betting odds that make any woman the favorite at -135 (Bet $135.00 to win $100.00).

Following Clarkson, Ruben Studdard emerged as the winner of Season 2 despite a controversy over the accuracy of reported results. Regardless of losing to Studdard, runner-up Clay Aiken has gone on to release three albums since appearing on Idol.

Fantasia Barrino won the next season of American Idol. Jennifer Hudson was a Season 3 contestant who was voted off.  She has recently gone on to star in Dreamgirls, winning the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress last night.  Season 3 also produced other “stars” such as the popular William Hung, who received widespread attention for his rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.”

Country singer Carrie Underwood beat out Bo Bice in Season 4. She recently won the Female Vocalist of Year award at the CMA Awards in November 2006.  Runner-up Bice released his album, The Real Thing, in December 2005.

Taylor Hicks was the winner of Season 5, with Katherine McPhee finishing as his runner-up.  Chris Daughtry, another popular contestant from Season 5, has also found stardom with the release of his self-titled album, Daughtry.

"There's Kelly, obviously; we knew of her success. Carrie Underwood has become a superstar. Jennifer Hudson is getting all the Oscar buzz. Look at the unknowns who have come through little Camp Idol, if you will," Seacrest says. "You can see the show is not only entertaining, but that there's validity to it, as well."

Idol has dominated the television line-up the past three seasons.  Last season the Tuesday and Wednesday shows were No. 1 and 2. About 36.3 million viewers watched May's finale, 2006's third-biggest TV event behind the Super Bowl and the Oscars.  ABC has decided to move their two hit shows, Lost and Dancing With the Stars to get out of Idol’s way.

"It's like a nuclear bomb" on the schedule, says judge Simon Cowell, referring to how other networks are shifting programs to steer clear of Idol.  “There's no competition. People leave us alone."
There will be a few changes to the formula this year.  The biggest change is a competition to write the winner’s song, which was the idea of Idol creator Simon Fuller.
