American Idol: The Stars Come Out In Memphis

by Thomas Jensen on Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

American Idol: The Stars Come Out In MemphisAfter auditions in Minneapolis and Seattle, the talent showed up for American Idol in Memphis.  Don’t worry, the not so talented showed up also.  After all, these are the people who make this part of the show hilarious.

Starting with the talent, Jason “Sundance” Head was the first contestant to advance to Hollywood.  His father, Roy Head, had a 1965 hit song “Treat Her Right” that was knocked off the charts by the Beatles.  Sundance claimed he was having a good year after marrying his girlfriend of seven years and expecting a baby around Christmas.  And now he was trying out for American Idol.  He sang “Stormy Monday” by Bobby Blue Band and the judges were blown away!  Simon said it was one of the best auditions of the season, and told Sundance if he didn’t make it to the finales he would be amazed.  After Sundance walked out, Simon said, “He blew Taylor out of the park.”  It seems as though Sundance Head may have sang his way into an early favorite spot for the season.  Males are a +150 underdog (bet $100 to win $150) to become the next American Idol at Bodog.com.

The saying, “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover” holds true for the next contestant, Sean Michael.  Michael looks like a combination of Fidel Castro, Jesus Christ and a homeless bum…a clean homeless bum anyway.  After he sang “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash, the judges were shocked and impressed at the same time.  Randy said, “I say 100% yes.  It don’t matter what you look like, you can blow.”

Professional background singer Melinda Doolittle represented the female talent.  Her nerves almost got the best of her before her audition.  She had to sit on her hands to make them stop shaking.  However, when she did sing, she sang well!  Doolittle is not used to being in the spotlight, but she wants to push herself into that position.  Although the judges were apprehensive about the difficulties background singers face coming to the forefront, Simon told Melinda, “You are in the top 2% of good singers this year.”

Dreams were shattered for the people who thought they could sing. Timika Sims wanted to be the next Mya.  Simon thought she wanted to be the next “mayor”.  He couldn’t understand a word she said, or sang.  Timika sang “Rock Wit U” by Ashanti and Simon asked who she thought she sounded like and Timika replied, “like Ashanti.”  She wanted to sing another song and the judges refused. She sang anyway, but still got a big fat “NO”.

Paula’s biggest fan in Tennessee came to try out, Topher. Topher’s wife recently cheated on him, he took her back and she cheated again.  He claims she will want him back after he is the next American Idol, but he won’t have her.  Simon asked why his wife left him and he replied, “because she’s a (beeped on TV).”  He sang “Footloose” and Simon asked if he happened to sing that the night before his wife left him. He got the boot, but he was easily cheered up when the panel reminded him he got to call his wife a (beeped on TV) on national television.

American Idol continues the audition process in New York City. The show will air on Fox, 8pm EST.
