Mel Gibson's violent epic Apocalypto is a long shot at 5 to 1 (Bet $1.00 to win $5.00) to win Best Foreign Language Film by Bodog.com. Apocalypto has broken box office records for foreign language films but has stiff competition from Letters From Iwo Jima which is the odds on favorite to win at the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
Gibson, as he did in Passion of the Christ, decided to use the Mayan dialects in Apocalypto to help audiences feel as though they were back in time.
Apocalypto tells the story of the Mayan civilization, which spanned modern day Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The movie depicts Mayans as being extremely violent and carrying out beheadings and human sacrifices. Some Mayans descendants in Mexico and Guatemala say the portrayal is derogatory, showing them as being savage. However, Gibson strives to make films that are historically accurate.
