Gnarls Barkley favored to win a Grammy for Album of the YearWho will win the “Album of the Year” award at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards? The odds are in Gnarls Barkley’s favor at 5/4 according to Bodog.com.  The hip-hop duo, Cee-Lo Green and DJ Danger Mouse, yielded one this year’s biggest hit singles, “Crazy.”  Chuck Arnold, a music critic for People Magazine, says, “I definitely think they’ll get record of the year…’Crazy’ is just one of those songs that succeeded on every level, as a big commercial hit and a critical one.”  Their album, “St. Elsewhere” is also nominated for “Best Alternative Music Album.”

Justin Timberlake’s favored 19/10 for his second solo album, “FutureSex/LoveSounds” which he released in September of this year after being on a four year hiatus from the music industry.  It didn’t take much for him to get back in the game.  Timberlake’s album is a multiplatinum success and has already generated two hit singles including, “Sexy Back” and “My Love”.  Timberlake’s other nominations include “Best PopVocal Album”, “Best Dance Recording”, and “Best Rap Sung Collaboration.”

John Mayer’s “Continuum” is also up for nomination for “Album of the Year.” He seems to be the underdog in this category with 5/1 odds.  But there’s still hope!  Mayer was nominated for “Best Pop Vocal Album”, another category he will face Timberlake in, and “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance” for his first single “Waiting on the World to Change”, an award he has already won twice.  His other nominations include his remake of the song “Route 66” from the soundtrack of the Disney movie “Cars” and his blues rock group John Mayer Trio was nominated for “Best Rock Album.”  In more recent news, Mayer has repeatedly shot down rumors that he is dating Jessica Simpson.  However, the two have been photographed dining out on more than one occasion. The possible reason, Simpson asked Mayer to record a duet with her for the soundtrack of her film “Blonde Ambition.”

The last two albums up for nomination in the “Album of the Year” category are “Taking the Long Way” by the Dixie Chicks and “Stadium Arcadium” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Both artists are holding steady with 3/2 odds.  In recent speculation, the Dixie Chicks may split after the awards show in February due to the 2003 controversy where band member Natalie Maines said she was ashamed to come from the same state as President George W. Bush.  The siblings are tired of defending themselves the past three years after receiving backlash from the country music world.  They want to take a long-term break and spend time with their families.
