Has OJ Simpson gone to far with new book titled “If I did It”?

by Thomas Jensen on Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Has OJ Simpson gone to far with new book titled "If I did It"?OJ Simpson is making headlines again.  Now for his new controversial book titled, "If I Did It".  It tells about how he would've killed his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, if he had actually done it.  Although Simpson does not directly say he killed the two, many believe this is his confession.

He created an uproar last week when he made plans for a TV interview to announce the book and discuss how he would've killed Nicole and Goldman.  Fox, which plans to air the interview on November 27 and November 29 said Simpson describes how he would've committed the slayings of Nicole and Goldman in 1994, if he were the responsible one".  Nicole's sister Denise Brown lashed out at the publisher of his book for "promoting the wrongdoing of criminals" and "commercializing abuse".  The book is due to go on sale November 30th.  Denise Brown also mentioned, "it's unfortunate that Simpson has decided to awaken a nightmare that we have painfully endured and worked so hard to move beyond".

Simspon was acquitted in 1995 of murder after a trial that became an instant mark in cultural history and a source of racial tension.  Later Simpson was found liable for the deaths in a wrongful death suit filed by the Goldman family.  He has failed to pay the $33.5 million judgement against him in the civil case.  HIs NFL pension and his home cannot be legally seized.  He and the family of the victims have argued in court over the money for years.

The victim's family can go after the proceeds from the book to pay off the judgement however only if the proceeds are going directly to Simpson.  There are ways around that such as having the proceeds go through others.  Clever lawyering will get you out of anything.   Simpson is able to release the book without creating any new legal worries but pronouncing it "hypothetically".  He can pretty much write whatever he wants and do it with impunity unless he is writing it about someone entirely different.

he is being slammed by the media and others for snubbing his finger to the system and laughing at their faces.  He believes he got away with murder and not honoring the judgement placed against him.

Fox has also been slammed for releasing the interview.  NBC stated that they believed this wasn't something they wanted to be part of.  NBC previously employed Simpson as a football analysist.  Fox is only airing the interview conveniently for "sweeps week" although that may backfire.  Many are so disgusted with Simpson that they may forego watching the interview.

One thing is certain, Simpson is a sick, sick man.  The fact that he would do such a thing after everything that he has already put the victim's families through is shameful.  He should be ashamed and realize that he is only making a fool of himself.  Once the book is released, the criticism will be harsher.  I hope he can handle it.
