Just hours after attending the MTV Movie Awards Sunday evening, Paris Hilton checked into Century Regional Detention Center to begin serving her jail term for violating her probation. Paris chose to surrender late at night and two days early to avoid the media frenzy.
Paris Hilton’s attorney, Richard Hutton, released the following statement on her behalf: "I am ready to face the consequences of violating probation. During the past few weeks, I have had a lot of time to think and have come to realize I made some mistakes. This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for their continued support. Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence."
Hilton has been in jail for two full days. According to her attorney things are going well. “She’s using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and, hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people,” Hutton said.
TMZ is reporting that Paris is sporting a short-sleeved, orange jumpsuit. She is confined to a 12x8 foot cell with a bunk bed, toilet and washbasin. Luckily her cell has two windows, one of them overlooks buildings.
Paris Hilton is being held in solitary confinement because of her celebrity status. She is only allowed out of the cell for one hour a day to take a shower or talk on the phone. Her attorney feels like Hilton is being punished more by being segregated from the general inmate population.
“If she was an ordinary citizen she would have been placed in the general population... She’d be living in a dorm with 30, 40, 50 other women and the time would pass pretty quick,” Richard Hutton said. “She is really being punished because of her celebrity.”
Hilton is hoping this time in jail will change the way people view her. "I did have a choice to go to a pay jail, but I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I'm not and that's why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I'm going to be treated like everyone else. I'm going to do the time, I'm going to do it the right way," she told reporters.
Paris Hilton is sentenced to 23 days in jail, but she will most likely not have to serve the full sentence.
