We Are Marshall tells the inspiring story of a small town football team from Huntington, West Virginia who on a tragic evening in 1970 changed the lives of everyone who loved the game of football.  For Marshall University football wasn't just a sport, it was a way of life.

While traveling back to Huntington after a game in North Carolina, 75 members of Marshall's football team including the coaching staff were killed in a plane crash.  Southern Airlines flight 932, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9 which Marshall chartered to transport the football team from Greenville, NC to Huntington, WV following their loss to East Carolina University crashed into a hill about a mile outside Tri-State Airport in Ceredo, WV.  37 players, 8 members of their coaching staff, 25 boosters and school officials and five crew members died in the crash.  There were absolutely no survivors.

In the wake of the crash, the immediate decision of Dean Donald Dedmon was to indefinetly suspend the football team however, he was convinced to reconsider allowing a new team to rise above the tragedy and bring hope to those from the city of Huntington.  Matthew McConaughy stars as Jack Lengyel, head coach of the Marshall football team that leads the fight for healing.  His assistant, William "Red" Dawson, coach played by Matthew Fox helps Lengyel achieve that victory.  Together they managed to rebuild the team in a few short months.  The junior varsity team, who were not on the plane, along with several other athletes from other sports played at Marshall, created the "young Herd" that brought spirit back to the Marshall family.

Although they only won just 2 games during the 1971 season, their first post crash victory was a heart wrenching win against Xavier University.  The grieving families found hope and strength in the leadership of Lengyel and Dawson.  In the end, the team of these two strong men helped to heal a community and brought the lives back to those left behind that struggled to cope with the devastating loss.
