David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey finally buried a decade old feud with Oprah appearing on Letterman’s late night show back in December. Oprah felt incredibly uncomfortable around Letterman all of these years because of his excessive jokes about the “woman of daytime TV”. Letterman would constantly use Oprah as the butt of his jokes throughout his show as well as during his one time failed stint as host of the Academy Awards in 1995. Oprah has always wondered why he chose her to berate publicly and questioned Letterman on that during her appearance. Neither one of them could figure that out. They continued with the show as if nothing were ever wrong.
Why the reason for the change of heart? Oprah stated during the reunion that she saw a more sensitive Dave after the birth of his son. Oprah sent Letterman a collection of books for his son’s birth which was the beginning of the newfound friendship. Letterman initially said that he could never appear on Oprah’s show because she would have him broken down and sobbing like a baby. Oprah has been known to be blunt and straightforward with her guests and Letterman was afraid of being out of his comfort zone and on her turf.

As of now, the two have buried the hatchet and still remain congenial towards each other. Oprah has mentioned that she received an excessive amount of fan mail regarding the feud and wished it didn’t take this long to end the dispute. Many also believe however, that Letterman only ended the feud publicly for a boost in his ratings. That particular episode was one of his highest rated for the year. If that was the reason, he definitely got what he wanted.
The only question now is whether or not Dave will appear on Oprah’s daytime talk show. He needs to reciprocate. He initially started the feud with his antics and comments so I feel that he needs to make an appearance on her show. He needs to end the speculation that it was all for television. Considering that anyone who is a bona fide viewer of each show, which are millions, have followed the quarrel, everyone is waiting for Dave to take his turn. We will have to tune in to find out!
