Will Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman be extradited to Mexico?

by Thomas Jensen on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Will Duane "Dog the Bounty Hunter" Chapman be extradited to Mexico?Duane Chapman, aka Dog the Bounty Hunter, was recently arrested by U.S. Marshals a few days ago at the request of the Mexican government.  He may be extradited to Mexico on charges from June 2003 when he illegally captured a wanted rapist, Max Factor heir Andrew Luster.

Chapman became popular from his cable television show Dog the Bounty Bunter.  Chapman along with his tight knit family including his brother Tim and son Leland were arrested in Mexico immediately after the capture of Lester.  They posted bail but never returned for their court appearance.  Lester is serving a 124 year sentence for his crime.  Bounty hunting is considered illegal in Mexico.  At the time of the capture, Mexican prosecutors maintained that Luster’s capture violated their laws.

The Chapmans each could face up to 8 years in prison if they are forced to return to Mexico and convicted on kidnapping charges.  Many people believe that Dog will be excused because “he gets the bad guys, he sure isn’t one of them”.  Beth Chapman, Duane’s wife, stated that the U.S Marshals forced their way into their home while the kids were getting ready for school and forced Chapman out of the home in handcuffs.  “It was a shock especially the way he was handled”, Beth stated in an interview to MSNBC.

Dog was once a criminal himself before he turned his life around and became a born again Christian. He served time in a Texas prison for first degree murder.  He rehabilitated himself and now feels obligated to help capture the criminals he once stood beside.  He has captured over six thousand criminals in the last two decades and isn’t finished yet.  He owns Da Kine Bail Bonds in Hawaii and 3 other offices in Colorado.  Although he isn’t as swift as he used to be, he feels he it is his life’s meaning to continue in his crusade to get criminals off the streets and clean up their lives.

Because of Dog’s popularity, many have written the Mexican government as well as Condeleeza Rice and voiced their feelings on Chapman and his great efforts. Rice will have the last say as to whether or not the Chapmans will be extradited.  Within days we shall have our answer.
