The Patriots offense was dealt a huge blow after their top receiver Wes Welker went down with a torn ACL and MCL. He contributed 1,348 yards receiving and four TD’s and was the NFL's leading receiver. But all’s not lost with WR Randy Moss and Tom Brady still raring to go. The Patriots offense is ranked third best in the league while averaging the sixth most points per-game (26.7ppg). Their third ranked pass game averages 277 yards per-game thanks to QB Tom Brady’s 4,398 yards passing and 28 TD passes. He’s thrown 13 interceptions, seven of which came in his last six games. Although he’s been to the big dance many times before, these playoffs Tom Brady will be reportable playing with three broken ribs and a broken index finger on his throwing hand . If his O-line doesn’t get him the protection he needs, they can always rely on the their 11th ranked running game, led by RB Laurence Maroney’s 757 yards rushing and nine TD’s. TE Benjamin Watson is Brady’s second best go to guy now that Wes Welker is out, Watson has 404 yards receiving and five TD’s. Still, the Pats remain dangerous because they have a coach, Bill Belichick, and several key players who know their way around the postseason. That will count for something. So will the fact that Brady has so far demonstrated an ability to play through his injuries.
On defense the Pats are ranked 11th while they allow the fifth least amount of points per-game (15.8ppg). Against the pass they are ranked 12th thanks to sack leaders Tully Banta-Cain, Derrick Burgess and Mike Wright who have a combined 18.5 sacks. They have two of the best at preventing deep passes, Safety Brandon Meriweather and CB Leigh Bodden each have five interceptions during the regular season. Against the rush they are ranked 12th thanks to LB’s Jerod Mayo and Brandon McGowan’s combined 127 tackles. Still, they don't generate enough of a pass rush, which could be trouble if the offense can't hold its own in a shootout.
They have the sixth best kicker in the league thanks to Stephen Gostkowski who has made 26 of 31 field goals. His misses weren’t game winning tries and he must be at his best if Brady can’t convert TD’s.
