AFC Playoff Picks: Tennessee Titans vs San Diego Chargers

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, January 6th, 2008

The Tennessee Titans meet the San Diego Chargers again today in AFC Playoff Picks action when they travel to the West Coast.  In that last game the Chargers beat the Titans in overtime giving them their only loss in their last five games.  Tennessee is still upset about that game believing that it got a bum call on a crucial fourth and 5 play for San Diego during the final drive of regulation.  Tennessee needed a win last week at No. 2 seed Indianapolis last week to get its first playoff spot since 2003 but saw starting quarterback Vince Young get hurt in the process.  However, he is expected to play today and will become the youngest quarterback in franchise history to start a playoff game.  Young will have to improve since the last time these two teams met as San Diego did a good job against intercepting him twice and holding him to two yards rushing on two carries.  BetOnline.com has the Titans listed as a huge +10 point underdog.

After a slow start and calls for head coach Norv Turner’s head the San Diego Chargers come into this contest one of the hottest teams in the league winning their last 6 games in a row by an average of 18 points per game and have won 10 of their last 12 overall.  The Chargers were no slouches on the offensive side of the ball as they finished the season ranked 3rd in the AFC scoring an average of 25.8 points per game behind only New England and Indianapolis.  Contributing to that performance was QB Phillip Rivers who threw for 3152 yards with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and start RB LaDainian Tomlinson who led the league for the second year in a row in rushing for 1474 yards. The Chargers sport one of the leagues best defenses as they led the NFL with 30 interceptions and finished fifth in scoring defense allowing only 17.8 points per game.

The Charger faithful must be a bit leery going into this one as despite a recent run of great regular season success San Diego is 0-2 SU & ATS in the postseason with both losses at home. In fact, the last playoff win for the franchise was in the ’95 AFC title game.

Most think Tennessee is a bit over matched in this one but stranger things have happened.
