Cincinnati was viewed as an afterthought in the AFC North when the season kicked off in September, not only because the 
team went 4-11-1 in 2008, but also because the division housed the defending champion Steelers and the 11-5 Ravens. The Bengals gradually proved they were for real, though, and by week 10 they had amassed a 7-2 record and recorded fours wins at the expense of Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
Cincy did not play as well from that point forward, going 3-4 down the stretch, but it did do enough to stay ahead in the division race and wrap up the crown with a week 16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Bengals have a lot of work do in order to realize any Super Bowl dreams because their 10-6 record belies some nasty statistics. Cincinnati's offense, which produced just 19 points per game this season (22nd) and an even worse 12.8 over the last four games (1-3 record), ranks 24th in yards per game (309) and 26th in passing yards per game (180.6). The unit's only saving grace was a ground attack that pounded out 128.5 yards per contest (ninth).
If the Bengals are able to move forward, it will most certainly be due to a jaw-dropping defensive run. Marvin Lewis' squad does appear capable of that, though. Cincy ranks sixth in points per game allowed (18.2), sixth in passing defense (203 yards per game allowed), and seventh in run defense (98.3 yards per game allowed).
