As with the conclusion of any NFL season there are teams who far exceeded preseason expectations and predictions while others failed miserably. While there are certainly a multitude of reasons why teams failed and/or succeeded, the bottom line is that the performance of any particular team is put squarely on the shoulders on the NFL coach. It didn’t take long for the Tuna to make that clear in Miami as he fired first year coach Cam Cameron just a short time after taking the reigns as head of football operations while Baltimore head coach Brain Billick was also let go. In Washington, although a separate situation, the pressures of being a head coach weighed on Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs as he called it quits. So as we take a look at the current lineup of coaches while considering this past season’s performance, who will be the next one to get the pink slip of call it quits? BetUS.com has the odds on the next coaching casualty.
Dick Jauron – 4 to 1 – Although Jauron had Buffalo in playoff contention for a while you have to wonder if Buffalo has had enough of not making the post season. After all, Marv Levy called it quits already.
Marvin Lewis – 7 to 1 – The Bengals stunk out the joint this year even to the point where even Marvin Lewis said that the team needed an overhaul. Will that start with the coach?
Romeo Crennel – 40 to 1 – Other than the Browns losing a game they needed to get into the playoffs, Crennel guided them to a very good season when not much was expected. More than likely not going anywhere
.Mike Shanahan – 25 to 1 – The Broncos missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. You have to wonder if Shanahan has worn out his welcome in Denver. They aren’t very likely to put up with much more losing.
Gary Kubiak – 25 to 1 – Not likely that first year coach Kubiak is going anywhere as he was able to guide Houston to a very respectable 8-8 mark. Unfortunately for them they were in a division that sent three teams to the playoffs.
Tony Dungy – 18 to 1 – One of the more professional and well liked coaches in the game. Once again guided the Colts to a first place finish and a shot to win back to back Super Bowls.
Jack Del Rio – 40 to 1 – The Jaguars already are coming off a playoff win while finishing the season with 11 wins. Del Rio had the offense humming in the final 7 games of the season. Not likely to go anywhere.
Herman Edwards – 20 to 1 – The Chiefs paid an awful lot of money for Edwards in a deal with the Jets. Although he had them in the playoffs his first season, they sunk to their worst performance in 20 years. Should he really stay?
Bill Belichick – 50 to 1 – Say what you want about one of the most hated or respected coaches in the NFL but he has certainly created a dynasty in New England. It’s just a matter of hold long he wants to stay.
Eric Mangin – 40 to 1 – In his first season everyone was hailing him as a boy genius when he turned around the hapless Jets. However, the wheel feel off his year as they won only 4 games (2 against the Dolphins). How long with the New York fans put up with that?
Lane Kiffin – 40 to 1 – It might have been his first season but the Raiders once again lost over 10 games in a season. He pretty much has mortgaged his future on DeMarcus Russell. Al Davis is senile enough to keep him around for at least another season.
Mike Tomlin – 30 to 1 – The Steelers barely made it out of the second half of the season and looked confused in their playoff loss to Jacksonville. However, not a bad season for a first year head coach. He’ll be back.
Norv Turner – 25 to 1 – He might have solidified coming back next season as the Chargers won their first round playoff game. Something that hadn’t done in a long time. It would be nice to be Indy this week but it won’t make or break whether or not Norv will be back.
Jeff Fisher – 40 to 1 – The Titans made the playoffs when some didn’t think that they would. Admittedly the Titans have been in a rebuilding mode which is a testament to the job that Fisher did this year. He’ll be back.
Ken Whisenhunt – 20 to 1 – Although the Cardinals didn’t make the playoffs they did manage to end the year 8-8. That can be considered a good year in Arizona as .500 or better seasons are few and far between.
John Fox – 12 to 1 – The Panthers just couldn’t win at home this season winning only once in a 7 win season. Carolina seems to be going nowhere fast and if Fox makes it to next season he better at least make the playoffs.
Lovie Smith – 30 to 1 – Hopefully for Lovie the Bears fell into the post Super Bowl trap as they continued a long list of previous Super Bowl losers to not make the playoffs the next season. Don’t expect Chicago to put up with that for long however.
Wade Phillips – 30 to 1 – All speculation was that this rendition of the Cowboys was Parcells team. Regardless, Phillips was able to keep them together and play some good football. Now we’ll see if he can get a playoff win. Something that Parcells couldn’t accomplish.
Rod Marinelli – 14 to 1 – Boy it sure looked good for Detroit early in the year as they started 6-2 only to end the season at 7-9. Anywhere else other than Detroit that would have been a death sentence for the coach. But then again, it is Detroit and they won more games then they have in a long time.
Mike McCarthy – 30 to 1 – Even with the old QB at the helm the Packers had a heck of a season and other than Favre have a nucleus of pretty good young players. Won’t be gong anywhere in the near term.
Brad Childress – 25 to 1 – The Vikings were up and down all year and fished at 8-8. Could be a tough situation for Childress if the Vikings don’t make the playoffs next season.
Sean Payton – 30 to 1 – After a dream season that saw first year coach Payton take the Saints to the playoffs and one game away from the Super Bowl they dropped off the map this season after an 0-4 start. The Saints are used to losing so they haven’t lost hope in Payton yet.
Tom Coughlin – 25 to 1 – Last weeks playoff win for the Giants just might have saved his job. If they can pull off a win over Dallas in the second round you can pretty much count on Coughlin coming back.
Andy Reid – 6 to 1 – Trouble on the field and off for Reid dropped the Eagles out of the playoffs this year. However, they played hard for Reid down the stretch so the option to stay will more than likely be his.
Scott Linehan – 5 to 1 – The only thing that Linehan has done is take the greatest show on turf to a bunch of misfits. It was only his second year at the helm but his second losing season. Not much hope here.
Mike Nolan – 4 to 1 – The 49ers had high hopes of contending for the division this year and after coming out of the blocks on fire the first couple of weeks they quickly fizzled. Might be the end of the road for Nolan.
Mike Holmgren – 3 to 1 – The Seahawks are back in the playoffs again and one win away from the NFC Championship game. However, this might be the last hurrah for Holmgren.
John Gruden – 40 to 1 – The Bucs went from worst to first and into the playoffs. Although they lost in the Wild Card game they did exceed expectations. This season might have saved Gruden’s job.
