Indianapolis, much like New Orleans, tore through its schedule with great offensive play, timely defense, and a healthy
dose of good kismet. The Colts won by an average of 6.8 points per game this season, which is indicative of the fact that they had just as many close calls as they did blowouts. Indy had seven really close games, winning those by an average of 2.8 points per contest; the opposition in those outings, one being the Baltimore Ravens, had a combined record of 51-45. The Colts also recorded six double digit wins, outscoring challengers by an average of 19.6 points in those games. The combined record of that group totaled 32-48.
So, the Colts have been brilliant, for the most part, against lesser competition, but, while still winning in most cases, have struggled some against average to above average competition. What does all that mean for Indy this postseason? It means the Colts had better bring their A game against the Ravens today, and if they advance, next week against the Chargers or Jets. Precedent is certainly not on the side of Peyton Manning and company when they have earned a week off. The Colts are 0-3 in Divisional Playoff games since 1999 when playing as a one or two seed. They are also 0-2 in postseason play since beating the Bears in Super Bowl XLI; both of those losses came against San Diego.
