The Green Bay Packers could out of their first round NFL Picks Playoff Bye and the #2 seed after missing not making the post season the last two seasons. The Packers enjoyed a huge comeback season as they matched a franchise record for wins set in 1996 and 1997 with 13. Those were the seasons when Green Bay made back-to-back Super Bowl appearances under Holmgren. The Packers were tough at home this season as they finished 7-1 SU in the “frozen tundra” losing only to the Chicago Bears. Much of this season’s success, for most part, can be attributed to the 38 year old Brett Favre who performed like the Favre of 10 years ago. He threw 28 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards. It was the fifth time in his 16 seasons in Green Bay where he has thrown for that much yardage. Unfortunately for Favre he will be trying to erase a horrible game versus the Chicago Bears when they not only lost the game but a shot at home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. WagerWeb.com has Packers listed as a -7.5 favorite in this one.
The Green Bay Packers went into the season with big question marks on offense with young and unproven running players but managed to rank 2nd in total yards per game and 4th in the NFL (2nd in the NFC) in scoring averaging 27.2 points per game. They also did a great job of protecting Favre this season as they allowed only 19 total sacks which was the third lowest total in the league. Their defense also improved this season as they ended ranked 6th in scoring allowed overall but was only 12th against the pass. That will be the Packers biggest problem this weekend as they will be facing a Seattle team who ranked 8th in the league in passing yardage.
Seattle has a very quick defense that puts a lot of pressure on opposing QB’s and that hasn’t been lost on head coach Mike McCarthy’s when he stated: "No. 1, we have the protection unit that can handle it," ……."The five-man protection, and the quarterback does an excellent job (of throwing quickly). So does (center) Scott Wells, as far as the protection aspect of it. It gives our receivers an opportunity to be in one-on-one situations, to win the routes, catch the ball and make plays. It's just a very basic philosophy of trying to spread the defense out."
The Packers will be looking to ruin Mike Holmgren’s return to Lambeau. Will their be a lot of leaps into the crowd by the Packers?
