Is the Indianapolis Colts 3-4 Defense their Achilies Heel?

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, January 13th, 2008

The Indianapolis Colts host the San Diego in the AFC Divisional Playoff NFL Picks this week in quest to repeat as Super Bowl Champions.  The Colts go into this game with an offense that has had another outstanding season despite as they ranked third in the NFL with in scoring averaging 28.1 points per game. QB Peyton Manning recorded his eighth 4,000 yard passing season.  With Marvin Harrison out injured backup WR Reggie Wayne has been the main beneficiary of Manning’s performance as he finished the season with a career high 104 receptions and 1,510 yards with 10 touchdowns.  Manning also had the luxury of having a ground game that was led by Joseph Addai who rushed for 1,072 yards and 12 TDs.  However, in this week’s matchup versus the San Diego Chargers the Colts will be going up against a 3-4 defensive scheme that has given them problems in the past.  But that so far doesn’t seem to have bothered the number as SBGglobal.com has the Colts listed as a +9 point favorite.

The main problem is that Indianapolis performance against 3-4 defenses has not been good and has included two losses to San Diego. Pittsburgh eliminated the Colts from the playoffs in 2005 and New England did the same thing in 2003 and 2004.  Even with the Colts potent offense, Indianapolis has managed to only average 12.6 points per game in those contests.  In addition the Colts have lost 10 of their last 11 against the Steelers, and are 3-5 versus the Patriots since Dungy was hired.  Although Dungy doesn’t come out and formally admit the problem you can read between the lines when he states "I don't know that we've had trouble with the 3-4, we've had trouble with teams that play the 3-4 who have good players and can have four guys come in at any time without having to blitz and still be in man coverage," ……. "There are a lot of variations of it, and it can cause you problems."  San Diego’s rendition of the 3-4 ranked fifth in the NFL in scoring defense this season.

Although the Colts offense gets most of the press most people overlook the fact that their defense was the NFL's top ranked scoring defense giving up only16.4 points per game.  Even though they Colts were without one of the NFL's best pass rushers in Freeney they have held five of their last seven opponents under 20 points.T

he Colts swept through the playoffs last season going 4-0 both SU and ATS.  Can they do it again?
