NFL Playoffs: San Diego Chargers vs Indianapolis Colts

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, January 13th, 2008

The San Diego Chargers look to continue their mastery of the Indianapolis Colts in an AFC NFL Picks Divisional Playoff game.  The San Diego Chargers are one of the few teams to have an edge on the Indianapolis Colts in recent years.  The Chargers come in with consecutive victories over the Colts, including a 23-21 win on November 11.  In that game the Chargers were able to pick off QB Peyton Manning six times to jump off to a quick 23-0 lead.  However, head coach Norv Turner knows he shouldn’t expect that same type of poor performance from the Colts this time around.   Still, since starting the season 1-3, the Chargers have won 1 of their last 13 and are coming off last weeks17-6 wild card playoff win over the Tennessee Titans.  Unfortunately for the Chargers All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates went down to injury last week.  In addition RB LaDainian Tomlinson had a horrible game as he rushed for only 42 yards on 21 carries.  Fortunately for San Diego QB Philip Rivers had a huge game completing five passes of at least 25 yards and threw for 292 overall.  San Diego's current hot streak doesn't appear to matter as Sportsbook.com has the Chargers listed as a hefty +9 point underdog.

The Colts come into this one knowing that even though they last to the Chargers earlier in the year with a horrendous effort by Manning they were still in a position to win when Adam Vinatieri blew  a 29-yard field goal with a little over a minute to play.  It was only the second time in his career that he has missed a field goal of under 30 yards in the fourth quarter.  One thing not to forget is that the Colts are the reigning Super Bowl Champs and are the first team in history to post five straight 12 win seasons.  Up to the final game of the season Indianapolis had won six consecutive games.   Marvin Harrison might not play again for the Colts but that might not matter as replacement receive Reggie Wayne scorched San Diego as he had 10 catches for 140 yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers come in as the hottest team in the league as they are a perfect 7-0 both SU and ATS their L7 games overall.  However, the Colts know how to win in the playoffs as they went a perfect 4-0 SU and ATS last season.  But that could change this year as the Chargers are 6-1 ATS in their L7 games in Indy.
