Will the Dallas Cowboys NFL Playoff drought continue?

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, January 13th, 2008

In an NFL Picks Playoff battle for supremacy the Dallas Cowboys host the New York Giants for the second time this season The Dallas Cowboys will be looking for their first playoff win in more than a decade.  Dallas comes into this game 13-3 SU but has not won a playoff game since beating Minnesota 40-15 in the wild-card round of the 1996 season which was a year after winning the Super Bowl. The drought is the longest in team history.  The Cowboys did make the playoffs last year but lost to Seattle in as QB Tony Romo fumbled the hold on a 19 yard field goal attempt with 1:19 left and was stopped 2 yards from the end zone and 1 from a first down when he tried to run the ball.  For the Cowboys to end their playoff drought they will have to beat the New York Giants for the third time this season. Dallas has never completed a three-game season sweep of a team.  BetUs.com has the Cowboys a solid -7.5 point favorite.

Over the last month of the season the Cowboys did not look like the team that went 11-1 their first 12 but most believe that was because of Terrell Owens not being in the lineup.  Owens lead the NFC with 15 touchdowns and ranks second with 90.3 receiving yards per game but did get injured in their next to last game of the season.  However, Owens practiced for the second straight day Friday and Phillips was hopeful to have him back in the lineup this week.  Head Coach Wade Phillips thinks he has a right to be hopeful when he was quoted as saying "Terrell said he's going to play and I believe him. I think he will attempt to play and we will let him," …….. "To what degree, at what level, remains to be seen in the game. Unless something unforeseen happens, I think he probably will (play)."

The Cowboys are also trying to downplay their success over the Giants this season but WR Patrick Clayton stated "We've got (confidence), but they don't want to go out a third time," ……. "They are 1-0 in the playoffs, we are 0-0. This is a whole new season. Whatever went on in the regular season doesn't matter. This is win or go home."

The Cowboys don't into this one with much momentum even though they were able to match their best record in team history.   Dallas went 2-2 SU in December and failed to score a touchdown in either loss.  Wade Phillips doesn’t seem to be worried though stating that "With 16 games, it's tough to be really good in every game," …… "(In some recent games) it wasn't like, `Man, we've got to win this game!' Now, we're in a big game, so we'll see how we play. But I think we'll play fine."
