The Vikings RB Adrian Peterson enters the postseason in somewhat of a slump after posting huge numbers during the first half of the season. He is their main producer with 18 TD’s, six in four games, but he hasn’t been getting many carries lately. He needs to carry the ball over 20 times for the Vikings 12th ranked ground game to be successful. He is one of the most versatile backs in the league who is as talented at finding holes as he is at catching the ball, he had 439 yards receiving during the regular season. The Vikings offense is based on a strong pass game and with QB Brett Favre at helm the Vikings have what it takes. Their offense is currently ranked fifth best in the league and they put up the second most points per-game (29.4ppg). Bret Favre has thrown for 4,202 yards with 33 TD's and seven interceptions for a 107 passer rating. Their eighth ranked pass game, led by WR Sidney Rice’s 1,312 yards receiving and eight TD’s, is a big threat along with receivers Percy Harvin, Bernard Berrian and TE Visanthe Shiancoe . They can catch anything Favre throws at him, if they can’t get open Favre throws to a space they can get too. Between the Vikings top four receivers they have a combined 29 TD’s, with TE Visanthe Shiancoe the leader at 11 TD’s. Despite losing three of their last five, their last regular season game win over the NY Giants showed they have what it takes. Minnesota has not won a home playoff game since the 2000 season and they are tied for the most Super Bowl losses (four).
On defense they struggle on the road but excel at home. Their defense is currently ranked the sixth best in the league and they allow the 10th least amount of points per-game (19.5). They aren’t the strongest against the pass and their secondary is weak, a potential problem considering all of the opponents in the NFC can design favorable matchups, especially if targeting those where weak safeties have to cover. They are currently ranked 19th against the pass, but they have one of the top defenders in the league with DE Jared Allen. Jared Allen leads a Minnesota defense that was tops in the NFL during the regular season with 48 sacks . They also have Kevin William and Pat Williams, when they are both in the game at the same time, the defense clicks. They have the second best rush defense in the league that allows a low 89 yards rushing a game and that’ll go along way a shutting down their opponent’s ground game.
Their next opponent is the Dallas Cowboys, at home.
