The Saints are well rested, they’ve had time to analyze their opponents and get their game back in order after losing their last three regular season games. The Saints revealed some cracks in their squad. Despite their league best offense that averages a whopping 400 yards per-game and scores the most points per-game (31.9ppg) teams have figured them out. They are vulnerable to teams that can hit them with repeated blitzing, their defense isn't nearly as opportunistic as it was early, and the offensive line isn't nearly as reliable as it once was . But they have QB Drew Brees to turn things around, QB Brees has thrown for 4,388 yards and 34 TD passes for a 109.6 passer rating. They’ll rely on their fourth ranked pass game to move the chains. WR Marques Colston leads their receiving core with 1,074 yards receiving and nine TD’s, but has gone three straight without scoring. QB Brees has many weapons to throw to, in fact he has nine receivers with two or more TD’s. They have a sixth ranked running game thanks to RB Pierre Thomas’ 793 yards rushing and eight TD’s, RB Thomas was injured in the final game with bruised ribs, but with a first round bye he should be ready to go. RB Reggie Bush is a great two dimensional back that has 390 yards rushing with five TD’s and he has 335 yards receiving and three TD’s. If opposing defenses can limit the big play, New Orleans' offense isn't nearly as threatening as it was during its run of success. If they have to face a rugged foe such as Dallas or Minnesota, teams with punishing ground games and dominant defensive fronts, the Super Bowl might not include the Saints.
On defense the Saints have struggled. In the Saints' final three games, opponents gained 1,205 yards and averaged 22ppg. Their overall defense is ranked 24th in the league while allowing the 20th most points per-game (21.3ppg) . They’ve won so many games on their high powered offense, teams just can’t catch up , even if their defense slips up . They are ranked 24th against the pass and on a bad note their top play breaker Safety Darren Sharper (nine interceptions) injured his knee during their final game and is listed as questionable for their first playoff game. They are ranked 21st against the rush and any team with a one two punch offense could have their way against the Saints defense.
The next opponent for the Saints is the Arizona Cardinals, at home.
