2011 NFL Playoff Predictions: New York Jets vs New England Patriots AFC Divisional Odds

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The New England Patriots host the New York Jets, Sunday Jan 16, in the AFC Divisional Round. They’ve met twice this season, in Week 2 when the Jets won 28-14, at home and in Week 13 the Patriots crushed the Jets 45-3, at home. NFL oddsmakers have the Patriots as -9.5 point home favorites over the Jets with the over/under set at 45.5 points. The Jets beat, or upset, Indianapolis 17-16 on the road during the AFC Wildcard Weekend. QB Mark Sanchez completed 18 of 31 passes for 189 yards with no TD’s and one interception. RB LaDainian Tomlinson had 16 carries for 82 yards with two TD’s, while RB Shonne Green had 19 for 70 yards. WR Braylon Edwards made four catches for 62 yards. Their defense managed one sack and no interceptions. The Jets got what they wanted, a revenge match against the Patriots, who waxed them 45-3 on Monday Night Football in Week 13. Asked why it’ll be different this time around in Foxborough, RT Damien Woody said, “Because the postseason is different from regular season. What happened in the regular season has no bearing on postseason at all. This confidence comes despite the fact that they haven’t beaten the Tom Brady-led Patriots in Foxborough since 2006. “I’m not going to lie, I remember what happened, but at the end of the day I know we’re better than them,” receiver Braylon Edwards said. If they want any chance of beating the Pats, QB Mark Sanchez has to deliver big plays in the clutch as he did against the Colts, and he has to succeed against the NFL's 30th-ranked pass defense. They showed far more composure against the Colts than they displayed in the previous showdown at Foxborough. Rex Ryan can confuse the Pats QB  Tom Brady with his wide variety of blitz combinations, and the Jets' pass rush has to be able to keep the Patriots' QB from consistently finding his mark in the pocket. Rex Ryan has three road playoff victories in his first two seasons as a head coach. The Jets offense is ranked 13th overall (347ypg) with a 21st ranked pass game (207ypg) and the NFL’s sixth best running game (139ypg). They score the 19th most amount of points per-game (21.9ppg). Braylon Edwards leads the Jets offense with six TD’s. The Jets have a third ranked defense (291ypg), a sixth ranked pass rush (200ypg) and the NFL’s third best ranked rush defense (90ypg). The Jets defense allows the sixth least amount of points per-game (19ppg).

The Patriots received a week off after finishing with the best record in the AFC. Now they know who they play and it’s "full speed ahead" in preparing to face New York for a third time this season. If Tom Brady plays the way he has throughout his MVP season, the Jets will be in trouble. In their Week 13 meeting, RB Danny Woodhead was able to rip off some big runs against the team that cut him during the preseason. TE’s Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Herndandez consistently found holes left open by the Jets' blitz-happy defense and don’t forget the Pats have Bill Belichick and his defensive scheming. They must keep Sanchez off-balance and uncertain with his reads against their defense. Through the half of the season, the Patriots allowed an average of 23.5 points per game, but that dropped to 15.6 in the second half. The Pats RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis hasn't fumbled the ball in 229 carries during the regular season. The Pats offense is ranked eighth overall (363ypg) with an 11th ranked pass game (240ypg) and a ninth ranked running game (123ypg). The Patriots score the most amount of points per-game (32.4ppg). RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis leads the Pats offense with 13 TD’s. The Patriots have a 25th ranked defense (366ypg), a 30th ranked pass rush (258ypg) and an 11th ranked rush defense (108ypg). The Pats give up the eighth least amount of points per-game (19.6ppg). Devin McCourty leads the Pats defense with seven interceptions.
