The Jets won in Cincinnati 24-14 as they shutdown the Bengals and put on an offensive showing thanks to QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez found his passing game making 12 of 15 passes for 182 yards with a TD. They’ve always relied on their league best running game which usually averages 174 yards a game; they had 171 yards against the Bengals seventh ranked rush defense. RB Thomas Jones may have gotten the Jets to the playoffs with his strong ground game, but RB Shonn Greene is the one who carried the team to a postseason victory . The rookie gained 135 yards on the ground against the Bengals last week on 21 carries. He figures to get plenty more action during their hunt for the 2010 Superbowl. RB Jones had 15 carries for 34 yards with a TD. Their league best running game will be up against the Chargers 20th ranked rush defense, led by RB Jones’ 1,402 yards rushing and he is their top scorer with 15 TD’s; he has four TD’s in his last three games. Their 31st ranked pass game will have to be at its best against the Chargers 11th ranked pass defense. Their top WR Jericho Cotchery has 888 yards receiving and three TD’s, while WR Braylon Edwards is second with 695 yards receiving and four TD’s. Edwards is known for his exceptional ability to make catches, but leads the league in dropped passes, he’ll need to be better and make things happen if they want to get past the Chargers. If the Jets can keep their pass game working along with their league best ground game, they have a one two combination that can take them deep into the playoffs . The Jets are 5-3 SU on the road while averaging 24ppg and allowing 15.6ppg. New York is trying to earn its first AFC Championship Game berth since 1998.
The Chargers are the hottest team heading into the playoffs winning 11 straight with their fifth ranked pass game and red hot QB Phillip Rivers. They are averaging 30ppg and allowing 16.7ppg in their last 11 games. What’s even better is QB Phillip Rivers play against Top-five defenses. In three games vs. the Ravens (No. 3), Bengals (No. 4) and Steelers (No. 5), QB Phillip Rivers averaged 333 passing yards, with eight touchdowns . He’s ranked right up there with arch nemesis Peyton Manning, whom he might face if everything goes good. He passed for a career-high 4,254 yards with 28 TD’s, averaged a career-high 8.8 yards per attempt and had only nine interceptions in 486 attempts. In fact Rivers has thrown only three interceptions over their last nine games. Their fifth ranked pass game will butt heads with the Jets league best pass rush in their faces. They are taking advantage over opponent’s defenses with speed and highly talented receiving weapons. They put pressure on every opponent by getting off to quick leads and making the other team one-dimensional. Their receiving core is led by WR’s Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates, who have a combined 17 TD’s. Don’t let their 31st ranked running fool you, they are a running team that uses the rush to gain short yardage first downs and from goal to go. Their ground game will have a hard time getting past the Jets eighth ranked rush defense. Their top rusher RB LaDainian Tomlinson has 730 yards rushing and leads his squad with 12 TD’s. They also have the two way game of RB Darren Sproles, who can run and catch, he has 343 yards rushing with three TD’s and 497 yards receiving and four TD’s. On defense the Chargers are ranked 16th overall while allowing the 11th least amount of points per-game (20ppg). They do have a weakness on defense, it’s their 20th ranked rush defense hasn't been the same since losing tackle Jamal Williams at the beginning of the year. Power running games can have success against the Chargers, but power running isn't going to win in the playoffs . It takes dynamic passing attacks, and the Chargers have a good enough pass rush to deal with anything that comes their way.
