NY Giants Impressive Run Ends in Green Bay

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Despite the New York Giants impressive run to the NFC Championship game , the “betting public” at Sportsbook.com doesn’t seem to have too much faith as they travel to the frozen tundra.  The G-Men have covered six of their last seven and have been almost automatic on the road having won and covered every game but one away from the Meadowlands.  That being said, 80% of the early bettors are more impressed with Green Bay’s remarkable 13-3-1 record ATS this season.

Looking beyond the trends, it appears as if bettors might be concerned with weather reports as it looks to be another cold one at Lambeau.  Whereas Brett Favre is one of the best cold weather quarterbacks of all time, no one knows which Eli will show up this Sunday.

“Not only will Eli have to deal with potentially brutal weather, he will be facing one of the better shutdown cornerback tandems,” stated Sportsbook.com Spokesman Dave Staley. “Plus you add the fact that this is Eli’s biggest game of his career by far and he isn’t known for handling the pressure all that well, until recently.”

Giants’ fans do have reason for hope as Peyton’s little brother has thrown 8 touchdowns to just 1 interception.  He’ll need to continue this production Sunday evening as he faces  Al Harris, Charles Woodson and the rest of the Packers defense that recorded 19 interceptions this season.

On defense, it is crucial for the Giants to put constant pressure on Favre. The Giants led the NFL in sacks this season (53) but will be challenged as the Packers’ offensive line gave up just 19 all year.  Although Favre has been known to pull of some remarkable plays with 300 pound linemen draped on him, he also forces bad passes.

So in summary: IF Eli takes care of the ball and plays like he did the last three games and IF Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora can get to Favre with consistency, the 7 points should be plenty for the betting minority.  Then again, those are two huge “Ifs” given the magnitude of the game.
