Will there be a Manning Repeat in 2008 Super Bowl?

by Alexander Banks on Friday, January 18th, 2008

This year of NFL Playoff Picks there will once again be a Manning behind center and one game away from the Super Bowl.  However, it will not be the one that most people expected.  This year it will be Eli Manning and not Peyton Manning who will represent the family this week when the surprising New York Giants travel to Lambeau Field to take the #2 seeded Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game.   Last year the Giants got to watch the playoffs after being eliminated in the wild card round of the playoffs with Eli watching his bigger brother Peyton's Colts team become Super Bowl Champions.  The Giants win last week, over the #1 seeded Dallas Cowboys as a 7 point underdog, advanced them to their first NFC Championship game in seven years. BetOnline.com has the Giants on the road as a +7 point underdog.

The Giants have been on an amazing run as they continued to defy the odds on the road chalking up their ninth straight victory that set a single season NFL record for most consecutive road wins.  A win over the Packers this week will match the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers who won three road playoff games as they capped off the season with a Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks.   Last week the New York were able to avenge an earlier regular season loss and they’ll have to do the same this week as the Packers crushed the Giants, 35-13, in Week Two at Giants Stadium.

The much maligned Eli Manning has been criticized for erratic play throughout the season but has seemed to have turned that around in the playoffs as he has thrown four TDs and no interceptions in the Giants' two playoff wins.  Manning’s good play might even be more critical this week as the Giants will have to not only face the mystique of Lambeau Field but the weather as well (the early forecast calls for a high of six degrees on Sunday.

This week’s rematch puts two of the NFL's oldest franchises against each other as these teams played for the NFL championship in 1961 and 1962, with Vince Lombardi's Packers winning each time.  However, the Giants are 6-0 ATS revenging a loss against and opponent by 14 points or more over the last 3 seasons.
