NFC Championship Game: Giants vs Packers

by Thomas Jensen on Saturday, January 19th, 2008

The New York Giants are playing the best football on the road in NFL history having won their last nine games.  To win their 10th straight they will have to defeat Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field where the Packers are almost unbeatable in the playoffs.  Green Bay is 13-2 all-time in playoffs games at Lambeau. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Packers at Home.

New York Giants (12-6) at Green Bay Packers (14-3)
Sunday, 6:30 pm Eastern – FOX
SBG Global Opening Line: Packers -7, Total 43.5

Brett Favre will be playing in his second NFC Championship game at Lambeau Field. Green Bay beat Carolina at home in 1997 and went on to win the Super Bowl. "Home-field advantage is what we are focused on," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "I think it is an advantage for any football team. It is definitely going to be cold here Sunday."  The Giants may not be as intimated as some teams considering they have won their last nine road games. "I think it is just a matter of the grit, the determination, the character, the leadership, the toughness, and the mental toughness," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "In a lot of ways when we come out and we get booed, we are kind of interested in how high the volume of the boos are."  The Giants won at Dallas last week 21-17. "This is an opportunity that can make all the dreams that you have ever had since you're a little kid come true with a couple wins," New York receiver Amani Toomer said.

SBG Global Current Line: Packers -7 (-120) Total 39.5

New York’s upset win against Dallas was good news for Green Bay because now the Packers host the NFC Championship game. Favre has been excellent this season for Green Bay throwing for 28 touchdowns and 4,155 yards. "I don't want to sound like I'm totally surprised," said Favre. "But I knew it could happen. The question was could I last."  Favre threw for three touchdowns last week in the win against Seattle.  Running back Ryan Grant ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns last week after losing two early fumbles.  Grant was with the Giants in the preseason before being traded to the Packers for a sixth-round draft pick. "Ryan performed and played very well during the preseason," Coughlin said. "We had a position, as anybody who scouts or knows football can relate to, that had five or six NFL football players and that was one of them, that was the position for us." The Packers may be throwing the ball more on Sunday, especially since New York’s secondary is banged up. The Giants played last Sunday without cornerbacks Sam Madison and Kevin Dockery.  Rookie cornerback Aaron Ross left the Dallas game with a shoulder injury but he has practiced this week.  Madison is also expected to try and play this week.  Favre threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns when the teams played earlier this season as Green Bay won 35-13.

On the other side of the ball the focus will be on Giants quarterback Eli Manning. He has played well the past two weeks after struggling in the regular season.  Manning has four touchdown passes and no interceptions in wins over Tampa Bay and Dallas. "I don't think I am doing anything different," Manning said. "I am just trying to take what the defense is giving me. It is just a matter of being in a good situation in the game."

Green Bay and the Giants have met five times in NFL playoff history but those games took place over 40 years ago.
