New England Patriots stay perfect, head to the Super Bowl

by Alexander Banks on Monday, January 21st, 2008

The New England Patriots stayed perfectly Super in NFL Results running their unbeaten streak to 18 games to become the first team ever to win that many games in the same season without a loss.  This time the victim was the San Diego Chargers 21-12.  The Patriots did end up with both yardage and time of possession advantages but it was the team that all have been accustomed to seeing for most of the season.  In fact, QB Tom Brady had one of his poorest games of his playoff career throwing a total of 3 interceptions.  One of them coming in the red zone, which was the first pick that he has thrown in that situation in just about 2 years.  Brady ended the game completing 22 of 33 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

The game ball in this one however has to go to RB Laurence Maroney who finished the game rushing and NFL results 122 yards on 25 carries.  It was Maroney who the Patriots leaned on when they needed it most as they held the ball for the last 8 minutes plus of the game.  Teammate running back Kevin Faulk didn’t rush for much but was Brady’s main weapon as he caught 8 passes for 82 yards.  One of them coming on a crucial third and long conversion, that allowed the Patriots to continue to keep the ball away from the Chargers.

San Diego came into this one banged up and kept saying that QB Philip Rivers was doubtful in this NFL results game with a bad right knee that was injured in last weeks win over the Colts.  However, Rivers unable to move all that much, played admirably completing 19 of 33 passes for 211 yards.  The problem was that he couldn’t put the ball in the end zone as the Chargers were in the red zone four times and were only able to come away with 4 field goals.  Star RB LaDainian Tomlinson who was also nursing an injury was only able to play in the first two series of the game and rushed for 5 yards on 2 carries.

So the Patriots once again represent the AFC in the Super Bowl for the fourth time since 2000 and will await the winner of the Green Bay and New York Giants contest where SBGglobal.com has the Packers listed as -7.5 point favorites.
