New York Jets vs Indianapolis Colts 2010 AFC Championship Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The NY Jets look to shutdown Peyton Manning and his Colts again, Sunday Jan 24, as the AFC Championship battle begins. The Jets have defeated the Colts in three of the past five matchups and recently beat them in Week 16. NFL oddsmakers at SPORTSBOOK.com have the Colts as -7.5 point home favs over the Jets with the over/under set at 39.5 points . The Jets will get another shot at Peyton Manning as the Jets league best defense looks to put Manning on his back. The Jets aren't just hot. They're sizzling. They've now won four consecutive games. They pounded the Bengals in the wild-card round at Cincinnati. And, with the league's top-ranked defense, they were able to shut down the San Diego Chargers who had one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. The Jets forced enough mistakes that made a difference in a close game. Like the Chargers, the Colts thrive on their ability to score. Like the Chargers, they aren't a particularly physical bunch. The Jets have been a run first team all season, but QB Mark Sanchez is breaking out of his shell. Can a rookie quarterback possibly be prepared for what it means to play for the conference title? Definitely. The kid is pretty much numb to pressure. He shows excellent poise, even when things aren't going well. If pressure hasn't gotten the better of him to this point, it probably never will. During the regular season Sanchez has thrown for 2,444 yards with 12 TD’s and 20 interceptions. Their first playoff game against Cincinnati, Sanchez made 12 of 15 in passes and threw for 182 yards with one TD and no interceptions. He had a 139.4 passer rating and became only the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to win his first post-season start, and the second to do so on the road. Sanchez became only the second rookie quarterback to win two consecutive playoff games, after Joe Flacco. The Jets have the best running game in the league, thanks to RB Thomas Jones.  Jones may have gotten the Jets to the playoffs with his strong ground game, but RB Shonn Greene is the one who has them winning in the playoffs . RB Greene ran for 135 yards with a TD against Cincinnati and 128 yards with a TD against the Chargers. He’ll be hard to stop against the Colts 25th ranked rush defense. The Jets CB Darrelle Revis is having the best year in his career and is currently regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. In 2009 Revis limited 17 of the best receivers in the league to no more than five catches for 57 yards. He allowed three TD’s while making seven interceptions off them. He’ll cover Colts WR Reggie Wayne and TE Dallas Clark.

The Colts might regret not beating the Jets in Week 16 and all pressure is on the Colts. Last week the Colts were all about the short pass attack with no reception over 20 yards. This week may be more of the same. Don't count on the Colts' league-worst running game to support the passing. The Colts' running backs only managed 22 runs for 62 yards in the first meeting. Teams that beat Manning get him off his launch point, and I would not be surprised to see the Jets blitz the hell out of the Colts. The Colts have the second best pass game with many receivers to go to. WR Austin Collie is red hot in the playoffs. Over the past five games, Collie has been targeted 27 times and has 17 receptions and three touchdowns — one more than Wayne over that span. The Jets top CB Derrelle Revis will be all over the Colts top producers and Manning will have to look elsewhere. The Jets weakness might be CB Lito Sheppard, who starts opposite Revis and will draw either Collie or Pierre Garcon. Manning will test Sheppard early, and if he likes what he sees Sheppard will get tested 15-20 times. Their 25th ranked rush defense will be tested to the max by the Jets league leading ground game . The Colts are an undersized speed defense built to rush the passer and play coverage. The Jets will not waste time running the ball outside on sweeps and tosses, which plays into the hands of the Colts' speed. They will run right up the gut.
