Superbowl Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Thursday, January 29th, 2009

The biggest sporting event in the world gets set to kickoff, Sunday Feb 1, as the Pittsburgh Steelers do battle with the Arizona Cardinals for the right to be named Superbowl XLIII Champions. NFL oddsmakers have the Arizona Cardinals as +7 point underdogs against the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers. The Arizona Cardinals have been underdogs in all three of their playoff games and now they’re in the Superbowl as underdogs. They’ve averaged above 30 points in their last three playoff games and QB Kurt Warner has eight touchdown passes with two interceptions. I think he’s made Ben Roethlisberger look like a chump. During the regular season he had his offense ranked fourth best in the league with the second best passing game in the league and they score the third most points-per-game than any other team.  WR Larry Fitzgerald can catch anything thrown remotely close to him and their running game has been great in their last two playoff games, their running game had 100 carries for 303 yards an average 3 yards a run. But they are more of a passing team mixed with some runs. Just remember last year the NY Giants were big underdogs, and look how they turned out.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the favs in their last two playoff games and they’re listed as favs to win Superbowl XLIII. But their wins haven’t been because of QB Ben Roethlisberger’s skills. During the regular season he had his team’s offense ranked 22nd overall with a horrible running game and an average passing game. In his last two playoff games Roethlisberger made 33 of 59 passes (56% comp) for 426 yards with two touchdown passes, to me those aren’t Superbowl worthy numbers. The Steelers defense is the reason they’re in. They led the league in every form of defense, but can they shut down a Cardinals offense that blew away the favored Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles? They allowed the Chargers seventh ranked passing game 275 passing yards and the Ravens 28th ranked passing game 141 passing yards. Can you imagine what the Cardinals will do?

The Bottom Line: ya I know defense wins Superbowls, but their hasn’t been an opponent with such a heavy offense. Kurt Warner has been to the big dance, as an underdog, and he got it done. Ben Roethlisberger is shaky and he’ll rely on his defense to bail him out.
