Super Bowl Picks: Hines Ward vs Larry Fitzgerald

by Matt Foust on Sunday, February 1st, 2009

When Super Bowl XLIII gets under way tonight, there will be no shortage of eyes on wide receivers Hines Ward and Larry Fitzgerald. Everyone wants to see if Ward is ready to go after injuring his knee against Baltimore and everyone is hoping that Fitzgerald will create another highlight reel moment with his aerial, ball hawking acrobatics. Super Bowl props for each player would indicate that fans will get to see both things.Super Bowl Picks: Hines Ward vs Larry Fitzgerald

Super Bowl Picks: Hines Ward vs Larry Fitzgerald at Sportbook.com are favoring Fitzgerald to have the bigger game with his Total Receiving Yards listed at 95.5 while Ward's is pegged at 65.5.

The biggest star of the NFL Playoffs, at least to this point, has been Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald. He has been unstoppable down the field, even when covered, as his leaping ability and big frame serve to keep defenders at his mercy when the ball is in the air. The former first round pick has caught 23 passes for an NFL record 419 yards and five touchdowns this post-season.

Amazingly, the Minnesota native has improved upon the extravagant numbers he put up in the regular season when he caught 96 passes for a career high 1431 yards and 12 touchdowns. Most wideouts would love to average 89 yards per game receiving as Fitzgerald did in the Cardinals first 16 games, but that number hardly seems respectable when compared to the 139.6 he has posted in the playoffs.

Hines Ward has had quite a season as well, leading the Steelers in receptions (81), receiving yardage (1043), and receiving touchdowns (7). The veteran receiver showed no signs of slowing down, starting 16 games for the eighth time in his 11 seasons with Pittsburgh. It looks as if he will prove his toughness and durability again tonight, taking the field with an injury that supposedly needs weeks to heal properly.

Ward has caught seven passes this post-season for 126 yards, despite leaving the AFC Championship Game early in the first half. However, in order to outduel his opposing counterpart in Super Bowl XLIII, Ward may need to post the same kind of numbers he did in winning the MVP honors in Super Bowl XL (5 receptions, 123 yards, and a touchdown).
