Arizona Super Bowl: NE Patriots vs NY Giants

by Alexander Banks on Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Time is winding down until we all get a chance to see if the New England Patriots strive for immortality will come to fruition when they take on the New York Giants in the Arizona Super Bowl.  These two teams met each other just a short time ago in the last game of the regular season.  In that game the Giants pushed the Patriots to the limit as Giant head coach Tom Coughlin decided to play all of his starters.  While being criticized for that move it might have given them the advantage needed to take down the unbeaten Patriots as not only did that game create momentum for the Giants heading into the playoffs, but it was a huge advantage for their Arizona Super Bowl preparation.

Now the Giants come into this game believing that they can win the game. There also seems to be a quiet confidence brewing among the New York players, who like their chances of winning.  So is this all jut marketing to create excitement for this game as the Giants are still listed as a big +12 point underdog at BetUs.com?  Or is this a team that actually has a change at winning?

Well, let’s take a look at the previous meeting between these two teams because there are some inside the game issues that need be, at least, considered.

1.     RG Stephen Neal and RT Nick Kaczur were injured and did not play for the Patriots.

2.     RB Ahmad Bradshaw and CB Kevin Dockery were injured and did not play for the Giants.

3.     The Giants scored more points (35) on the Patriots than any other team in 2007.

4.     The Giants led the Patriots for 42 minutes and 56 seconds, the longest of any team in 2007.

5.     The Patriots scored 22 consecutive points to go from 12 down to up by 10 in the fourth quarter.

6.     Eli Manning threw four touchdown passes, the most by any QB opposing the Patriots this season.

7.     New England averaged just 1.7 yards on 26 rushing attempts.

8.     The Giants had a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The bottom line is that the Patriots have a way of making teams believe that they must play a near perfect game to win and that any long drive that doesn’t produces a field goal instead of a touchdown is a failure.  Sure I believe that the Giants have a shot at winning the game but my gut says that the Patriots just have too many weapons that they can use to grab the victory.  Now covering the number is another matter to address all together.
