The Giants earned their way to the big game by virtue of an overtime victory in the NFC Championship Game over the Green Bay Packers. Once again, QB Eli Manning came through connecting on 21 of 40 passes for 246 yards and no interceptions and continually put them in a position to win the game. The win for the Giants gave them their first NFC championship in seven years and ended a monthlong surge that reversed a trend of mediocrity built around Manning's inconsistency and his calm leadership has been the key to New York's turnaround. In the bitter cold of Green Bay the Giants were also to move the ball on the ground as they rushed for 134 yards on 39 carriers. The New England Patriots bring into this Super Bowl game the most successful regular and post season in history as well as the most prolific scoring offense. However, recently they have struggled going only 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games. In the AFC Championship game the usually unflappable QB Tom Brady was shaky as he competed 22 of 33 with two touchdowns but threw an uncharacteristic three interceptions. In addition to Brady’s struggles WR Randy Moss was a non-factor for the second straight game in the playoffs. The Patriot defense who ranked at the top all season had problems with San Diego even though they were without RB LaDainian Tomlinson and QB Philip Rivers was playing with a torn ACL in his knee as they allowed 207 yards in the air and 104 on the ground. Fortunately with all those struggles the Patriots were able to get another big game out of RB Laurence Maroney as he rushed for 122 yards on 25 carries. It was his fourth game over 100 yards in his last five and second of the playoffs.
This will be the second time that these two teams have met this season. The first being the last game of the regular season when Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin had his starters play giving New England a huge scare at ruining their perfect season. In fact, the Giants held the largest lead anyone has held versus the Patriots this season in the second half. But as has been the routine, the Patriots rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out the win. That game however has the Giants coming into this one with a load of confidence even though they are listed as such a huge underdog.
