The Colts behind Peyton Manning looked like a well-oiled machine. They kept taking repetitions, they’ve refined their offense and quickened an already fast defense. The Colts established they can still beat a good team even if you take away Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. On top of that, the Colts ran the ball against the league’s best defense for more than 100 yards and the Saints are going to have to honor the run as well as the pass. The Colts have the edge because Peyton Manning and the rest of their offense, along with their defense, are playing their best at the perfect time. They rolled through the first two weeks of the playoffs outscoring their opponents 50-20. In their two playoff games Manning threw five TD passes with one interception. Manning was the least sacked quarterback in the league. He was sacked twice by the league’s best defense of the Jets during the AFC Championship game. Despite getting sacked twice in the first five plays of the Jets game Manning quickly figured out the Jets’ pressure package, after that it was smooth sailing from there on. The Colts are ranked ninth on offense, averaging 363.6 yards per game. They are averaging 79.8 yards rushing and 283.8 yards passing so far. Dwight Freeney, the Colts' five-time Pro Bowl defensive end and career sack leader, isn't sure if he'll play or not. He’s tough and has been resting his injury hoping he’ll have a chance to play. Veteran Raheem Brock will move into the starting lineup if Dwight Freeney is limited, or out. Keyunta Dawson and Eric Foster will likely will move into the rotation. "He's smart and has been around and understands our defense extremely well," Caldwell said of Brock. "He's highly motivated. With that kind of experience, that helps us if Dwight cannot go."
The Saints do have worries facing the Colts. During the NFC Championship game against the Vikings, the Vikings outrushed, outpassed, they controlled the clock, won on third down, had fewer penalties, had 218 more yards and almost overcame six fumbles and two interceptions. The Vikings dug their own grave, but it also suggested the Saints need to make a lot of improvement against a Colts team that will not make that many mistakes. When it came to pass-rush pressure, the Saints did not sack Brett Favre once in 46 attempts. They got after Favre, but they were chasing a quarterback that was sacked on average three times every road game. In the Saints last two playoff games they’ve outscored their opponents 76-42, but they’ve been giving up too many points and against the Colts, that’s a recipe for disaster! Drew Brees & Co have had two weeks to settle down and get back on track as the most explosive offense in the NFL . Drew Brees didn’t look like the hot quarterback he did during the regular season. He finished this game with the worst completion rate (54.8%) he has had all season. Despite those stats he’s thrown six TD passes without an interception. The Saints are a fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants thrill ride that wins whatever way they have to. They're not the hot team or the most rugged. The Saints are ranked league best on offense, averaging 396.9 yards per game. They are averaging 130.8 yards rushing and 266.2 yards passing.
