2010 NFL Draft: New England Patriot Needs & Futures Odds

by Matt Foust on Monday, April 19th, 2010

2010 NFL Draft New England Patriot Needs & Futures Odds: This Thursday night marks the beginning of the 2010 NFL Draft as the first round will take place on April 22nd at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. The action is scheduled to get underway at 7:30pm ET and can be seen live on the NFL Network. The New England Patriots will select 22nd overall barring a trade up or down. The Pats come into this year's draft with more needs than they have had in quite some time, which should make Thursday an intriguing night for New England fans.

2009 Summary: Finished first in the AFC East with a 10-6 record. Lost 14-33 to Baltimore in the Wild Card Round of Playoffs.

2010 New England Patriot Needs:  Wide Receiver, Running Back, Tight End, Linebacker, Defensive End

Possible First Round Picks: New England's offense centers around Tom Brady and the passing game, however, with Randy Moss starting to show his age and Wes Welker recovering from ACL surgery, the Patriots may look at running the ball a little more often. Laurence Maroney, who led the team in rushing last season, seems to spend a good deal of time in the doghouse and his ball security make him a less than reliable every down option. Outside of Maroney, age is a major factor as Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor, and Sammy Morris are all 33 or older.

California's Jahvid Best or Fresno State's Ryan Mathews could be good fits should the Pats chose to go for a running back. Both players should be available when New England picks at 22. Mathews, who ran a 4.37 forty at the combine (Best 4.34), is the bigger back at 6' 0" 218lbs. He has the strength to run between the tackles but also the speed to hit the edges. Clemson's C.J. Spiller, who appears to be the biggest game changer at the position, may be off the board before the Patriots hit the podium.

Defensively, New England could use some help along the line and at linebacker. The Patriots ranked 23rd in the league last year with 31 sacks. Another speed rusher at linebacker would be a welcome addition. Texas' Sergio Kindle makes a good deal of sense here, if he is available, as he would appear to be a perfect fit in New England 3-4 defensive front. Kindle recorded 16 sacks over the past two seasons for the Longhorns.
