2010 NFL Draft: San Diego Chargers Needs & Futures Odds

by Matt Foust on Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

2010 NFL Draft: San Diego will have to wait a while before it can add to its already potent roster; however, there should still be plenty of good help available when the Chargers pick at 28th. Maybe they can find someone to help them end their playoff woes and finally put them in the Super Bowl.

2009 Summary: Finished first in the AFC West with a 13-3 record. Lost to the Jets 14-17 in the Divisional Playoff.

2010 San Diego Chargers Needs: Defensive Tackle, Running Back, Offensive Line, Wide Receiver, Cornerback

Possible First Round Picks:

Ryan Mathews (RB – Fresno State): LaDainian Tomlinson is now in New York, which leaves the Chargers just a little short-handed at running back. Darren Sproles is still on the roster, but San Diego cannot expect him to be an every down back, especially if they continue to use him in the return game. Mathews' punishing style would go like hand and glove with Sproles shifty, quick hitting approach.

Terrence Cody (DT – Alabama): The Senior Day photos of Cody did not help his draft stock, but he still remains an upper echelon D-line prospect. Cody would fit perfectly into a 3-4 scheme, but, as Jamaal Williams proved in San Diego, big guys can reak havoc from the interior in a 4-3 front too. With Williams now gone, the Chargers would love to find a quality replacement.

Charles Brown (OT – USC): San Diego only has three tackles on its roster and they could use some help on the right side. While Brown could use a little work on his run blocking, over time he should help the Chargers improve on the 3.3 yards per carry they averaged a season ago.
