2010 NFL Draft Results: Tim Tebow Taken in First Rd by Denver Broncos – All the first round prognosticating has ended and the dust has settled from a festive NFL Draft opening night in New York. While there were a few surprises in the top 32, none equaled the Denver Broncos taking Tim Tebow with the 25th overall pick. Tebow was not expected to go in the first round, especially with Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy still on the board, but the Broncos, which had traded down twice before trading up with Baltimore to grab Tebow, defied convention as well as expectation.
2010 NFL Draft Results: First Round Surprises
Tim Tebow (Denver No. 25): The Broncos traded for Brady Quinn in the offseason and had publically expressed their
support for incumbant passer Kyle Orton after that manuever. So not only was Tebow jumping into the first round a surprise, his going to the Broncos was also shocking. Obviously Josh McDaniels feels Tebow has the tools to become a winner at the next level. What does that selection say about Jimmy Clausen, though, who by all accounts, was the second best quarterback on the board? Clausen, by the way, was favored at -130 moneyline odds at Sportsbook.com to be taken within the top 10 of last night's first round.
Joe Haden (Cleveland No. 7): Rumors circulated before last night's proceedings that the Browns were offering the Rams the world in order to get the top pick and thus a crack at Sam Bradford. Given that and the fact that Cleveland stills needs a quarterback (who thinks Delhomme is the long-tern answer?) makes the selection of Haden, who most draft pundits had pegged as a mid to late first round pick, a surprise (the Over 12.5 on Haden was favored at -125 odds). Yes, he addresses a need but not the Browns biggest one. Seems like they could have traded down and acquired, perhaps, an extra second round pick and still nabbed Haden later in the first.
Tyson Alualu (Jacksonville No. 10): The Jaguars needed some defensive line help but not many expected them to take Alualu, who was viewed as a late first to low second type talent. Alualu had 13 sacks over the past two years at California, which is a respectable total for a guy who played at tackle most of the time, but he certainly was not the premiere pass rusher on the board at 10. Jason Pierre-Paul, Derrick Morgan, and Brandon Graham were all still available to Jacksonville. Any one of those players would, most likely, make a bigger impact on the Jaguars anemic pass rush (a league worst 14 sacks in 2009).
Ryan Mathews (San Diego No. 12): The Chargers needed a running back and they traded up with the Dolphins to grab one. Not a huge surprise, but Mathews might have been available to them later in the first. With a draft steeped in running back talent, it seems strange that a team would trade up as high as 12 to grab one.
