The 2009 NFL Draft results are in for the first and second rounds of day one and Point-Spreads.com is pleased to announce that the Detroit Lions selected Georgia Bulldogs Quarterback Matthew Stafford as the No. 1 overall pick in the first round. Stafford was a heavy favorite to go first. The Lions get the 2008 2nd Team All SEC Selection and 2009 Capital One Bowl MVP for a cool $41.7 million guarantee on a six year $78 million dollar contract.
The 2009 NFL Draft results prove the odds makers had it right when they made OT Jason Smith of Baylor the favorite to be selected as the second pick overall. The St. Louis Rams took Smith to help beef up their offensive line.
Kansas City took LSU Tigers DE Tyson Jackson with their third pick overall in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The selection shocked the crowd in attendance, Sporting News projected Jackson would go in the third round. The Chiefs traded TE Tony Gonzalez earlier in the week and signed former New England Patriots QB Matt Cassel to a six year deal with $36 million in guaranteed money this morning.
The Seattle Seahawks selected LB Aaron Curry from Wake Forest with the fourth overall select. 2008 Dick Butkus Award Winner for the most outstanding line backer in college football.
The Cleveland Browns allowed the New York Jets to trade up twelve spots to fifth in order to grab USC Trojans Quarterback Mark Sanchez. The GQ model like Sanchez is a perfect fit for the New York market. Mark Sanchez is a 2008 1st Team PAC 10 quarterback and 2009 Rose Bowl MVP with a 14-2 record as a started at Southern California. The New York Jets gave up Kenyon Coleman, Brett Ratliff, Abram Elam, the 17th and the 52nd picks overall to get their franchise quarterback.
The Cincinnati Bengals took the 2008 Outland Trophy Award Winning OT Andre Smith out of Alabama. The Oakland Raiders passed up on Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree to grab Maryland WR Darius Heyward-Bey with the 7th selection overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Raiders crowd in attendance were shocked by the announcement, but experts realized quickly that this selection was a typical Al Davis move going for speed.
The Jacksonville Jaguars selected OT Eugene Monroe with the 8th pick overall in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Monroe started 29 games in his college career and was a 2009 1st Team All ACC Selection. With the ninth selection in the first round, the Green Bay Packers grabbed DT B.J. Raji out of Boston College.
The San Francisco 49ers snagged Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree with their 10th pick in the first round. The Raiders passed on Crabtree, the best wide receiver in the draft and the move will sure to be an ongoing debate throughout next season in the Bay Area. Crabtree had 15 Career 100+ yard games in his college career.
With the eleventh selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills grabbed junior DE Aaron Maybin out of Penn State. Aaron Maybin was a 2008 1st Team All-American in college football. The Denver Broncos selected RB Knowshon Moreno of Georgia as their 12th selection in the first round, making the former Bulldog the first running back selected by the Broncos in the NFL Draft since 1985. Moreno had 13 100+ yard games in his college football career.
The Washington Redskins grabbed Texas DE Brian Orakpo in the 13th spot to shore up their pass rush. Orakpo was the 2008 Big 12 Defense Player of the Year. The New Orleans Saints took Ohio State Buckeyes DB Malcom Jenkins with the 14th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft to shore up their weak secondary.
With the 15th pick, the Houston Texans grabbed LB Brian Cushing of the USC Trojans and the San Diego Chargers took DE Larry English from Northern Illinois with the 16th pick surprising many experts that pegged English as a second round selection.
After dropping down to the 17th selection so that the New York Jets could grab Sanchez, the Cleveland Browns decided to allow Tampa Bay to trade up to grab QB Josh Freeman from Kansas State. The Bucs moved up two spots giving the Browns the 19th and the 191st picks overall.
Tennessee DE Robert Ayers was selected 18th overall in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. For the third time in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns traded it to the Philadelphia and the Eagles grabbed WR Jeremy Maclin out of Missouri. Jeremy Maclin was a 2008 First Team All Big 12 Selection and is a nice weapon for Eagles QB Donovan McNabb to utilize on offense in 2009.
For the 20th selection overall, which the Lions got for trading Roy William, Detroit selected TE Brandon Pettigrew from Oklahoma State. Pettigrew, widely regarded as the top tight end in the draft, joins fellow first rounder and the No. 1 overall selection Matthew Stafford in the Motor City.
The Cleveland Browns finally selected a first round pick when they took center Alex Mack of California in the 21st spot. Mack had started 49 games in his college career. With the 22nd selection, the Minnesota Vikings grabbed WR Percy Harvin from the Florida Gators. The explosive Harvin has durability issues, but will be a nice compliment to Adrian Peterson.
The New England Patriots traded the 23rd pick to Baltimore and the Ravens selected OT Michael Oher of Ole Miss. Many experts believed Michael could have been drafted in the top 10 of the 2009 NFL Draft. Oher was a 2008 First Team All SEC Selection.
The Atlanta Falcons grabbed with the 24th selection DT Peria Jerry from Ole Miss. Jerry was a 2008 1st Team AP All American and 2008 1st Team All SEC Selection. With the 25th pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins took CB Vontae Davis of Illinois. The 2008 3rd Team AP All American selection, Davis is a big cornerback that can play man coverage.
The New England Patriots traded the 26th pick to Green Bay and the Packers selected USC Trojan LB Clay Matthews. The 2008 2nd Team All PAC 10 selection out of Southern California is widely considered the best special teams player in the entire 2009 NFL Draft and was the third Trojan to be selected in the first round.
With the 27th pick, the Indianapolis Colts take the 2008 Big East Offensive Player of the Year, running back Donald Brown of Connecticut. The Buffalo Bills selected Louisville center Eric Wood with the 28th selection overall. Wood was a 2008 1st Team All Big East Selection for the Cardinals.
The New York Giants selected WR Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina with the 29th overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. Nicks was a 2008 1st Team All ACC Selection and had ten 100+ yard games in his college career. With the 30th pick the Tennessee Titans took 2008 1st Team All Big East Selection, WR Kenny Britt of Rutgers.
Ohio State running back Chris Beanie Wells was selected 31st overall by the Arizona Cardinals. The Pittsburgh Steelers grabbed DT Evander Hood from Missouri with the 32nd and final pick of the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
