Philadelphia Eagles 2010 NFL Predictions

by Matt Foust on Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Philadelphia Eagles 2010 NFL Predictions: Always a perennial powerhouse in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles will look to build on last year's 11-5 campaign and reach the playoffs for the seventh time in nine years. 2010 NFL Predictions at SPORTSBETTING.com like the Eagles chances to improve, despite a face changing offseason, as it has Philadelphia listed at +240 moneyline odds to win the NFC East and +800 odds to win the NFC Championship.

Philadelphia, like it did in 2008, closed out the 2009 season in strong fashion, winning six of its last seven games. The Philadelphia Eagles 2010 NFL PredictionsEagles again qualified for the playoffs, but disappointed with a 14-34 Wild Card ouster at the hands of NFC East rival Dallas. The early exit prompted some big changes in Philly as the club elected to trade star quarterback Donovan McNabb to the rival Redskins in the offseason.

McNabb, who had a 92.9 quarterback rating last season after throwing for 3553 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, will be replaced by 25 year old Kevin Kolb. Kolb started the first three games of the season last year in place of the injured McNabb; he compiled a 88.9 passer rating while throwing four touchdowns and three interceptions in those outings.

Kolb will be surrounded by ample talent with playmakers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin at receiver and the sure handed Brent Celek at tight end. The Houston product will also have second year pro LeSean McCoy in the backfield as the former Pittsburgh Panther takes over fulltime for the departed Brian Westbrook. McCoy led the team in rushing a season ago with 637 yards (4.1 ypc); he also added 40 receptions for 308 yards.

The offensive line, which gave up 38 sacks in 2009, is a bit of a question mark, but it is not a major weakness. Depth is perhaps the biggest concern upfront, especially given the team's past injury issues at center and guard.

Defensively the Eagles took to new coordinator Sean McDermott well last season, ranking 12th in yards per game allowed (321.1), ninth against the run (104.7), and third in sacks (44). The team retained most of last year's starters and has playmakers at every level, including defensive end Trent Cole (12.5 sacks), linebacker Quintin Mikell (91 tackles), and cornerback Asante Samuel (nine interceptions).

The Eagles also gave McDermott a new toy by selecting Michigan standout Brandon Graham with the 13th overall pick in April's draft. Graham produced 15.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks for the Wolverines last season. He should be an immediate starter at defensive end or outside linebacker, making Philadelphia's formidable pass rush even more dangerous.

Philadelphia Eagles 2010 NFL Predictions: 9-7, Third place in the NFC East. Every division game is a challenge and the Eagles have to face quality teams in the Packers, Falcons, Titans, Colts, Texans, 49ers, and Vikings outside of the NFC East. It is difficult to envision this team going 10-6 or 11-5 with that kind of slate, especially with a relative green horn under center.
