New York Giants 2010 NFL Predictions

by Matt Foust on Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

New York Giants 2010 NFL Predictions: The New York Giants 2009 season started with a bang but ended with a fizzle as the team turned a 5-0 start into an 8-8 finish. The dismal conclusion fell far short of the expectations created by 2008's 12-4 division winning squad. 2010 NFL Predictions at Sportsbook.com anticipate that this year's Giants' team will resemble that bunch rather than last season's imposters. The online oddsmaker has New York's season win total set at 8.5 with the Over being favored at -135 odds.

The Giants offense ranked eighth in the league last season after averaging 366 yards and 25 points per New York Giants 2010 NFL Predictionsgame. All of the starters from that impressive group are back this year, including quarterback Eli Manning, who threw for 4021 yards and 27 touchdowns.

The skill positions appear to be in good shape, especially at receiver, where Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, and Mario Manningham, all emerged as threats for Manning. Smith reeled in 107 catches for 1220 yards and seven touchdowns, surpassing even the most optimistic expectations for the third year wideout. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, who combined to rush for 1613 yards and 12 touchdowns a season ago, both return to the backfield.

The team's real problems last season, surprisingly, came on the defensive side of the ball. While the numbers yardage-wise were not that horrendous (ranked 13th in total defense at 324.9 yards per game allowed), the points given up were shocking. The Giants once vaunted defense allowed almost 27 points per game, the third worst tally in all of football. The unit also went from 42 sacks in 2008 to 32 last season.

New York brass did not stand pat this offseason, though, signing free agent safties Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant as well as drafting defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph with their first two picks in the draft. The new additions, along with the hiring of defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, should drastically reduce the number of points given up and return the Giants defense to its customary place in the upper third of the NFL.

New York Giants 2010 NFL Predictions: 10-6, Second Place in the NFC East. The roster is talented and capable of producing 11 or 12 wins, but the schedule is brutal. Not only do the Giants face the Cowboys and Eagles twice, they get Indianapolis, Tennessee, and Houston out of the AFC and they have road games at Minnesota and at Green Bay.
