Washington Redskins 2010 NFL Predictions

by Matt Foust on Monday, July 5th, 2010

Washington Redskins 2010 NFL Predictions: The Redskins went from 8-8 in 2008 to a miserable 4-12 last season under second year coach Jim Zorn. The drop in wins resulted in the former Seahawks quarterback being shown the door. Daniel Synder went big in finding a replacement by hiring two time Super Bowl winner Mike Shanahan. However, 2010 NFL Predictions at Sportsbook.com still have Washington pegged for last place in the NFC East at +550 odds to win the division.

The Redskins offense never materialized under Zorn or quarterback Jason Campbell, ranking 22nd in the Washington Redskins 2010 NFL Predictionsleague in yards per game and 26th in scoring at 312.5 and 16.6 respectively. Campbell is in Oakland and Zorn is serving as the quarterback's coach for the Baltimore Ravens as a result. Mike Shanahan and his son Kyle will now oversee the offense, along with former Eagles signal caller Donovan McNabb, who the club traded for in the offseason.

McNabb still displayed some quality passing chops last season, compiling a 92.9 passer rating after throwing for 3553 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions. He should do well under Shanahan, as the former has worked in the West Coast offense his entire career and the latter employed it in two Super Bowl winning seasons.

McNabb has a couple of weapons around him (although none the calibur of DeSean Jackson) in Santana Moss and Chris Cooley, but it remains to be seen if Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson or Willie Parker have much left in the tank. The three players combined to rush for a total of 1464 yards last season.

The new coaching staff is hopeful that first round draft pick Trent Williams (OT – Oklahoma) can shore up an offensive line that allowed 46 sacks last year and paved the way for a paltry 94 rushing yards per game.

The Redskins defense played well last season, for the most part, ranking 10th in yards per game allowed (319.7) and 18th in scoring (18.6). The team added defensive end Adam Carriker and cornerback Phillip Buchanon and retained all but three players (CB Fred Smoot, DE Renaldo Wynn, DT Cornelius Grffin) from last season's unit. The new additions should help, especially if Albert Haynesworth can somehow find it within himself to play to the level of his paycheck.

Washington Redskins 2010 NFL Predictions: 6-10, Fourth Place NFC East. Definite improvements but the changes are not enough, at least at this juncture, to allow the team to compete in a loaded NFC East. Also consider the Redskins have non-divisional games against the Texans, Titans, Colts, Packers, and Vikings. Not helpful.
