New England Patriots 2010 NFL Predictions

by Matt Foust on Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

New England Patriots 2010 NFL Predictions: It has been a tough couple of years for the Patriots, as the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2008, despite an 11-5 record, and got beat at home by the Ravens in last season's Wild Card round. Does anyone actually expect New England's post-season drought to extend into a third year? 2010 NFL Predictions at Sportsbook.com are looking for a rebound from Tom Brady and company as the Patriots are presently listed at +1300 moneyline odds to win the 2011 Super Bowl.

New England put together a 10-6 record last season, which was good enough for first place in the AFC East; however, eight New England Patriots 2010 NFL Predictionsof the team's wins came at home. The disproportionate number of victories in Foxborough did not inspire a great deal of confidence in the Patriots entering the Playoffs, but no one expected them to fall in a Wild Card match with Baltimore at Gillette Stadium.

That turnover laden loss, no doubt, still stings as the team prepares for the start of training camp and subsequent NFL season. The club lost little in the offseason, but added receivers David Patten and Torry Holt, tight end Alge Crumpler, and defensive tackles Damione Lewis and Gerard Warren. New England also loaded up in the draft, where it had 10 picks. While it is unlikely that every one of those players makes the roster, Belichick got definite contributors in cornerback Devin McCourty, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, and linebacker Brandon Spikes.

The offense, which averaged 26.7 points and 397.3 yards per game in 2009, should be even better this season with the added weapons. Tom Brady did not post the pre-injury, mind numbing numbers of 2007; however, the Michigan product still threw for 4398 yards and 28 touchdowns in route to a 96.2 passer rating. Brady will, once again, be working behind one of the best lines in the league (18 sacks allowed last year), which means his production is not likely to dip in 2010.

Defensively the Pats ranked 11th in yards per game allowed at 320.2 and fifth in points per game allowed at 17.8. While the familiar names of Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel, and Tedy Bruschi are gone, this unit has plenty of playmakers. Linebacker Jerod Mayo produced 103 tackles last season, despite missing three games, and Vince Wilfork is still plugging things up in the middle of New England's 3-4 set. This group may not have the star power of the Jets, but it is a solid unit with good, young talent on the edges and in the middle.

New England Patriots 2010 NFL Predictions: 11-5, First Place AFC East. Added to last year's 10-6 team and Tom Brady is that much further away from major knee surgery. Bill Belichick will make the most of the fact that the Jets are expected to win the division.
