New York Jets 2010 NFL Predictions: New York enjoyed an up and down 9-7 season, which featured two three game win streaks and two three game losing streaks, in Rex Ryan's first year on the sidelines. Despite the Jekyll and Hyde nature of last year's Jets squad, they were able to parlay their late season momentum (won five of last six games) into a post-season berth, and, once there, they surprised almost everyone with road wins at Cincinnati and San Diego. Those two victories have created high expectations for the team this season as 2010 NFL Predictions at Sportsbook.com have the Jets listed at +135 moneyline odds to win the AFC East.
Rex Ryan did plenty of talking last year as the big guy had more than enough to say before, during, and after the season.
However, the defensive minded first year head coach delivered on his lip flapping as New York won two playoff games and put itself in a position to contend in 2010. In Ryan's mind, the Jets are probably already hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
The coach has reason to be optimistic, though, despite the team's pedestrian offense, which is led by a second year quarterback coming off an offseason surgery. Mark Sanchez appears to be healing fine, though, and should build on last year's 2444 yard, 12 touchdown, 20 interception tally. The USC product will have a new recevier in former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes and a new backup running back in future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson.
The Jets ground game, which ranked first in the NFL last season by averaging 172.3 yards per contest, did lose leading rusher Thomas Jones (Chiefs), but Shonn Greene should fill in nicely as he did during the team's playoff run. The tandem of Greene and Tomlinson running behind New York's bruising line will be the strength of the offense as Sanchez continues to grow as a passer.
Ryan's defense more than delivered last season, ranking first in yards per game and points per game allowed at 252.3 and 14.8. All of the main contributors are back, including linebackers David Harris and Bart Scott. And joining Darrelle Revis, if he avoids a holdout, in the defensive backfield are first round draft pick Kyle Wilson out of Boise State and former Chargers standout Antonio Cromartie.
New York Jets 2010 NFL Predictions: 10-6, Second Place AFC East. Sanchez will improve, but still make enough mistakes to cost his team a win or two. His 12 touchdowns to 20 interceptions a season ago does not typically get a team to the playoffs, yet alone the brink of the Super Bowl. Does anyone see him turning that into 20 and 12 this year? Probably not. The team also draws the Ravens, Steelers, Bengals, Vikings, Packers and Texans in non-divisional play. That's a tough road, even if most of those games are at home.
